A scholarship or stipend could help you to cover the costs of your course and living expenses.
UTS offers a number of scholarships and funding schemes to support both domestic and international students undertaking research degrees. The schemes include living allowance stipends, tuition fee scholarships, conference funds and equity support grants.
For those applying for a Pan University Scholarship, funded by the Commonwealth or the University (e.g. RTPS, IRTP, UTSP, IRS), please refer to the UTS Scholarship Criteria to verify eligibility.
Commencing 1 January 2024, living allowance stipends awarded to PhD and Masters by Research candidates are valued at $37,000 per annum. The living allowance stipend will match the Commonwealth Research Training Program base rate where this increases to over $37,000 p.a., and any increase will apply to new and ongoing awards.
- For PhD candidates, stipends may be awarded for a maximum duration of three years and six months (full time rate and duration).
- For Master by Research candidates, awards are for a maximum duration of two years (full time rate and duration).
Applications for scholarships are considered and awarded through a competitive process.

When you're filling out your online application to study at UTS, you will see a check box that says 'I want to be considered for UTS scholarships' on the form. Ticking this box means you will be automatically assessed for the following UTS scholarship schemes and notified of the outcome by email.

Sir Gerard Brennan Scholarship Open to: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying in the Faculty of Law. This scholarship was established to honour the work of former Chancellor Sir Gerard Brennan, AC KBE, who was also former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. Throughout his career, Sir Gerard demonstrated his commitment to people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. Value: $50,291 per annum for a period of up to four years. This scholarship is provided to assist with general living costs. Jumbunna Postgraduate Research Scholarship Open to: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This scholarship supports indigenous Australian students who can demonstrate exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research at UTS. Preference is given to students who are completing a research project that has the potential to benefit Australian Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders. Quentin Bryce Law Doctoral (QBLD) Scholarships Open to: Commencing PhD students in the Faculty of Law. These scholarships promote and reward quality research within the UTS Faculty of Law. Applications for the QBLD require a separate application to the Faculty of Law before the advertised deadline. Value: $40,000 per annum, with a research support fund of $1,500 per annum for a period of up to four years. Funder: UTS Faculty of Law. Ross Milbourne Research Scholarship in Economics Open to: Higher degree research students studying economics. This scholarship, in honour of former Vice-Chancellor Professor Ross Milbourne, supports students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research in a field of economics at UTS. Applications for the Ross Milbourne Scholarship require an Expression of Interest application to the Faculty of Business for course code C02058 before the advertised deadline. External scholarships by application
UTS connects students to a range of externally funded scholarships. Each scholarship has specific criteria and closing dates set by the funder. Your application should be submitted to the funding organisation, not UTS.
FAQs
RTP Fees Offset scholarships
The Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset scholarship is funded by the Australian Government. If your offer letter states that you have been awarded an RTP Fees Offset scholarship, you will receive the funding in the form of a fee waiver for the maximum period of time allowed for you to complete your research program, rather than as a lump sum in your bank account.
Who is eligible?
- Both PhD and Masters applicants from all faculties can apply
- Both domestic and international students are eligible.
How to apply
- The application is completed through UTS as long as it is received by the deadline and the applicant has ticked that they want to be considered for all competitive scholarships.
Impact on transferring students
- Your enrolment at your previous institution will be recorded and taken into consideration when determining your candidature duration at UTS. Overtime fees will be due if you do not submit by your work submission date.

Defer your scholarship
If you’re unable to start your research degree in the session your scholarship has been awarded, you may be able to defer your scholarship funding until the following session. It is unlikely that you will be able to delay until the next calendar year. Please check your scholarship Conditions of Award for deferment options, or email the Graduate Research School at grs@uts.edu.au for advice
