Recognition of prior learning (RPL) for UTS Engineering courses

Key points to note: 

  • RPL applications are typically considered for subjects completed within ten years prior to commencing a UTS Engineering course. 

Application deadlines: 

  • Domestic applicants: You can submit applications upon receiving an offer of admission to a UTS Engineering course and prior to the census date of your first enrolled session.
  • International applicants: You can submit applications when applying to UTS, and no later than formal enrolment in a UTS Engineering course.

Undergraduate RPL:

Recognition of studies from various institutions:

  • Another university: Relevant study from recognised universities may qualify for RPL. This could exempt you from specific core subjects or reduce elective requirements. Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, with a requirement to demonstrate the currency and relevance of your knowledge and skills.
  • UTS College: Successful completion of the UTS College Diploma of Engineering could earn you up to 48 credit points (equivalent to one full-time year) of RPL, depending on major and degree chosen.
  • TAFE NSW: Diploma and Advanced Diplomas, particularly in engineering, may be eligible for RPL. Agreements for RPL are detailed in the recognition of prior learning tool. You may be required to sit the Math Readiness Survey. If passed, an additional 6 credit points of advanced standing may be granted otherwise you will be enrolled in 35010 Foundation Mathematics.

Postgraduate coursework RPL:

Exemptions and substitutions

  • Exemptions: Core subjects may be exempted if you've previously completed them at UTS or another institution. Course specific limits may apply. Confirm if your course is eligible for RPL by exemption through course specific information pages on this site. 
  • Substitutions: Substitutions may be granted for subjects where you've covered similar/equivalent content in previous studies or work experience. These should align with the subject being substituted and typically represent a more advanced version.

RPL in postgraduate courses for undergraduate studies:

  • You may be eligible for up to 24cp of subject exemptions based on RPL on the completion of equivalent subjects in a UTS recognised undergraduate engineering program of a minimum of 4 years or equivalent. 
  • Additional RPL may be granted via subject substitution to an alternative/advanced postgraduate subject in a similar field of study. 

RPL for work experience:

  • Exemption RPL is not granted based on work experience or in-house industry courses. 
  • If you are completing the Master of Professional Engineering, you may be eligible for RPL concerning Engineering Work Experience under specific conditions.
  • Supporting documentation includes: 
    • Resume 
    • Company letter providing detailed information about your work experience.
