Introduction
0:01
[Music]
0:05
Jumbunna is a special place for
0:07
indigenous students to come together to
0:09
feel supported.  It's a wonderful space
0:11
where they can study, chat with staff
0:13
chat with fellow peers, we're really
0:16
here, we exist to enable their success
0:20
Jumbunna currently has over 350 students
0:23
from all different communities from
0:25
across the nation
0:27
particularly given that a lot of
0:28
aboriginal and torres strait islander
0:30
people are first in their family to come
0:32
to university Jumbunna then plays the
0:34
role of their family when they're away
0:36
from their family.
Services
0:39
Jumbunna provides students with a range
0:41
of services including academic support,
0:43
learning support, we can help students
0:45
with housing,
0:47
we provide meals for students, there's
0:50
free printing services, there's a
0:51
computer lab.   We can assist students
0:54
through a pathways program
0:56
where we tailor their pathway to
0:59
university individually,
Accommodation
1:02
Coming from Darwin, John Bunner's
1:03
actually set me up with accommodation
1:05
here
1:06
and I found that so helpful you know
1:07
coming so far from home I don't
1:09
know what to do and where to go and
1:11
everything they've done so far has
1:12
helped shape where I go in my life and
1:14
especially in Sydney it's a massive city
1:16
compared to Darwin and
1:18
yeah I wouldn't be you know as straight
1:20
and narrow as I am it wasn't for jumping
1:21
as hell
1:22
well through Jumbunna they actually
1:24
support you with giving you an itaz
1:25
tutor and so that gives you a lot of
1:27
extra support whether you're you know
1:28
doing whatever degree there is they have
1:30
a person there that helps you with
1:31
whatever it is you're studying and so
1:33
not only that they have the staff that
1:35
here are trained and you know they've
1:36
got you know they know what they're
1:37
doing so like they're here to support
1:39
you through it all
1:40
they've offered me opportunities that I
Opportunities
1:42
wouldn't normally have as a student this
1:44
being actually attending uts.   I would
1:47
have had to wait a lot longer to
1:48
actually get in
1:50
but through Jumbunna they actually made
1:51
it possible to start and just transfer
1:54
everything over with no hassle no issues
1:56
and I was really appreciative of that
1:58
Jumbunna has supported me through
Support
2:01
enabling access to tutors to
2:04
Counselling, to health advice, we have
2:06
access to Aunty-Glendra whenever we need
2:08
to have a chat about something
2:09
uh even little things by offering us
2:12
food and drink whenever we come in and
2:14
it feels like you're you're talking to
2:16
your mother when you're here even we're all
2:18
from
2:19
different places it feels very much like
2:21
a family.  I would definitely recommend
2:24
studying at UTS especially if you're
2:26
Indigenous because the community here
2:27
they just
2:29
they're just lovely and they love you
2:30
and they take you in and doesn't matter
2:32
where you're from what stage you're at
2:34
or how much you know how much you don't
2:36
know they just take you and they show
2:38
you the way.
