Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

At UTS, we understand the dedication it takes to reach your current position – forging a path through prior study, work, and diverse learning experiences.

With our unique recognition of prior learning (RPL) approach, UTS goes beyond traditional credit systems. We acknowledge both your formal qualifications and the wealth of informal learning you've accumulated along the way. This personalised RPL process not only recognises your hard work but also streamlines the duration and cost of your course, ensuring you reach your future goals faster.

How we assess prior learning

Your previous education or employment must be evaluated to be equivalent to a UTS subject as per the Admissions and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy and Procedures. This assessment considers:

  • currency of knowledge
  • relevance of your previous learning
  • learning outcomes
  • volume of learning
  • content of study
  • learning and assessment approaches.

Prior learning can be recognised only once within any individual UTS course, it cannot be recognised again for another subject or component in that course.

Alternatively, subject substitution might be offered. This is where an alternative subject(s) of equivalent credit point value is added to your study plan.

It’s important to note that UTS assesses RPL only after an enrolment offer is accepted.

You can use the RPL tool to search for approved prior learning.

Types of prior learning

RPL can be determined by:

  • Articulation: through established agreements with external tertiary institutions and education providers. These are detailed in the RPL tool.
  • Case-by-case recognition: based on your previous study and work experience, following the submission and assessment of an RPL application.

RPL may be granted as either:

  • Specified credit (subject exemption): when prior learning is equivalent to a specific UTS subject.
  • Unspecified credit (unspecified elective/general advanced standing): when prior learning counts towards an elective component but isn’t equivalent to a specific UTS subject.

Application timeframe for RPL

Domestic applicants

Submit your RPL application after receiving a course offer and before your initial enrolment.

For late UAC offers, submit your application at enrolment or as soon as possible, but no later than one week after the start of the teaching session.

International applicants

Consider the impact of RPL on your course duration and student visa requirements.

Apply for RPL when applying for your UTS course to ensure processing before your letter of offer is issued.

Applications made after the first session will only be considered in exceptional circumstances with a written statement explaining the delay and any previous applications.
