Overview

The Garth Barnett Scholarship is offered in memory of Garth Barnett, a self-taught designer and mentor who helped students commencing their career in architecture and design.

This scholarship aims to provide financial support for students going into their second year of study who have demonstrated a passion and talent for design, specifically in Interior Architecture. Preference will be given to applicants who have experienced financial hardship and/or other educational barriers.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be commencing their second year of a Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture (single or combined) as listed below at UTS in the Autumn session of the Scholarship selection:

    • C10271 Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture; OR

    • C10322 Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation; OR

    • C10272 Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture Bachelor of International Studies; OR

    • C09144 Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture Bachelor of International Studies (Honours)

  • Have a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of 60 or above.

  • Completed a minimum of 36 credit points (in one of the eligible degrees above).

  • All candidates must apply using the UTS Scholarships Application form to be eligible. 

  • All candidates must be available to attend an interview (Zoom or Face to Face).

 

In addition, preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated financial disadvantage and/or other education barriers. 

Applicants who intend to provide evidence of the preferential criteria will need to apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for an Equity Scholarship, or get an independent financial assessment through the Financial Assistance Service that confirms they meet the preferential criteria.

 

Selection process

As demonstrated in the Scholarship application and interview:

  • Passion and talent for interior design; and

  • Motivation to pursue a career in interiors using innovative thinking and exceptional problem-solving skills; and

  • Demonstrated initiative to seek opportunities to continually advance their professional and personal lives; and

  • Demonstrated interest and understanding in the legacy and work of Garth Barnett; and

  • Likelihood that the Scholarship will increase the ability of the Recipient to complete their UTS course at a higher level of performance than would otherwise be the case.

     

Preference may be given to students experiencing financial hardship and/or multiple educational barriers.

Other information

When applying through UAC for a UTS Equity Scholarship, Family Tax Benefit will not be considered as demonstrative of financial hardship. Only applicants receiving a Centrelink means-tested income support payment, or demonstrating exceptional financial hardship with supporting evidence will be considered.
