Overview

This Scholarship has been established to support UTS undergraduate law students who can demonstrate financial disadvantage.

Female applicants from refugee, asylum seeker, migrant, or Indigenous backgrounds facing disadvantage may be given preference.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or humanitarian protection visa; and
  • Be a commencing, or continuing student (with of minimum of at least 36 credit points to complete), in an undergraduate UTS Faculty of Law degree (or combined Law degree); and
  • Be intending to enrol or enrolled full-time (minimum of 18 credit points per session) in the session of selection; and
  • Demonstrate financial hardship as assessed by a UAC Equity Scholarship application or an independent financial assessment through the Financial Assistance Service that confirms they meet the financial hardship criteria; and
  • All candidates must apply using the UTS online Scholarships Application form to be eligible.
  • All candidates must be available to attend an interview (in person or via Zoom).

Selection process

As demonstrated in the Scholarship application and interview:

  • Motivation to succeed in their chosen Faculty of Law course;
  • Demonstrated initiative to seek opportunities to continually advance their professional and personal lives;
  • Motivation to contribute to the community;
  • Financial Hardship as outlined by the UAC Equity Scholarship or as confirmed by the Financial Assistance Service.

Preference may be given to female students who:

  • Hold a permanent humanitarian visa; or
  • Have temporary asylum seeker or refugee residence status and hold a Bridging Visa E or A (and has made an application for a Protection Visa), or Temporary Protection Visa (Subclass 785), or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (Subclass 790)3; or
  • Are of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and provide either:
    • a Confirmation of Aboriginality from a Local Aboriginal Land Council or other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation; or
    • UTS Statutory Declaration form accompanied by two written references from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people from the applicant’s community who can confirm their identity and are not an immediate family member; and

Other information

When applying through UAC for UTS Equity Scholarships, Family Tax Benefit will not be considered as demonstrative of financial hardship. Only applicants receiving a Centrelink means-tested income support payment, or demonstrating exceptional financial hardship with supporting evidence will be considered. To be eligible for this scholarship, you will need to apply to Centrelink (or make a claim) for the Youth Allowance/Abstudy or other Centrelink benefit applicable to you. Your application may still be considered once you have provided evidence of a Centrelink (or other Commonwealth) means-tested income support payment (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy,  Abstudy). 

Steps to complete a UAC Equity Scholarship application:
1.    Apply for a means-tested income support payment (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, Abstudy) via Centrelink- click on `Register' online. Centrelink will provide you with your own Centrelink Reference Number (CRN)
2.    Please apply for a UAC Equity Scholarship with your Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN). Apply at uac.edu.au/equity/
3.    If your Centrelink claim wasn’t approved at the time of applying you will need to update your UAC Equity Scholarship application at UAC once you receive confirmation that your benefit has been approved.  Ask them to refresh your 2025-2026 UAC Equity Scholarship application;
4.    You must submit or update your details on UAC website by the closing date.
