Domestic undergraduate eligibility

Understand your course’s admissions requirements

To be eligible to study an undergraduate course, you’ll need to meet our undergraduate admissions requirements.  Your course may also have additional requirements.

The information in this section is for domestic undergraduate students. If you're applying as an international student, visit UTS International.

Am I eligible to apply for an undergraduate course?

We set undergraduate eligibility requirements to make sure that you will have the knowledge and skills to study our courses.

However, we believe in the potential of all our applicants, even if you don’t meet the eligibility requirements at first. Our entry schemes and pathways can support for your application – visit Admissions and entry to learn more.

To apply for an undergraduate course, you must:

  1. be eligible to matriculate
  2. meet English language requirements
  3. have an assessable qualification.

Some UTS courses also have:

  • compulsory selection criteria – which must be submitted on time for your application to be considered
  • optional selection criteria – which give you an opportunity to improve your chances of selection to the course through the entry schemes we offer.

You may also be required to meet course-specific criteria, such as an interview, test or personal statement. This information is available on the course webpage or in the UTS Handbook.

What does eligible to matriculate mean?

Matriculation is the minimum standard that you must satisfy to be eligible for consideration to study a course.

To be eligible to matriculate, we require you to satisfy one of the following:

  • have attained a full NSW HSC or equivalent (such as an International Baccalaureate (IB)) with an ATAR of 69 (excluding adjustments), or
  • have completed a UTS Foundation Studies course, a recognised tertiary preparation course, associate diploma, AQF diploma or advanced diploma, or
  • have completed one year full-time or equivalent of tertiary study in a single course within the same institution, or
  • be at least 20 years of age on 1 March for the year of intake (for example, if you are applying to start your study at UTS in 2025, the date would be 1 March 2025).

What are the UTS English language requirements?

If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English proficiency.

Visit English language requirements for specific details on this requirement.

What is considered an assessable qualification?

Recent school leaver qualifications

If you're a recent school leaver, you'll be considered for admission based on your ATAR (or equivalent Year 12 result – for example, IB, interstate or overseas equivalent qualifications, NZ NCEA Level 3), plus any adjustments you’re eligible for through the entry schemes we offer.

If you have an overseas secondary qualification, check that it is on the commonly accepted qualifications list.

Non-recent school leaver qualifications

If you’re a non-recent school leaver, these qualifications are considered for admission to most courses, in addition to your Year 12 results.

Australian university qualifications

Does UTS have subject prerequisites for courses?

No, we don’t have HSC subject prerequisites for our courses.

Faculties may identify assumed knowledge and/or recommended studies for courses. These criteria are designed to assist you in successfully completing the course, and you’re advised to achieve them before you begin the course.

If you are applying for a science course, we offer bridging courses for students who don't meet the assumed knowledge requirements. Most of these courses are offered in late January/early February, between enrolment and the start of session. Bridging courses in physics, chemistry and mathematics are available to all new students undertaking degree studies.

Visit our bridging course page for more information.

Can I apply using my International Baccalaureate (IB)

We consider IB qualifications for admissions purposes. Your IB score will be converted to a UAC rank when applying via UAC. UAC’s rank conversion table will help you identify how competitive your application is for a UTS course.

Courses with special requirements

Some courses have their own special entry requirements:

  • Bachelor of Information Technology (Co-op) (intended for recent school leavers only)
  • Bachelor of Nursing (Enrolled Nurse Entry) (non-recent school leavers only)
