Accepting your offer
Once your PhD or Research Masters application is approved, you need to formally accept your offer and your scholarship (if you were awarded one).
When you receive a letter of offer, you have the option to accept it or defer your start date. The process differs depending on whether you’re an international or domestic student.
You will be notified by email of the outcome of your PhD or Research Masters application. While this process usually takes 12 weeks, factors out of our control may delay a decision.
The acceptance process is different for domestic students and international students. To accept, follow the steps below within two weeks of receiving your offer.
Domestic students
International students
Defer your start date
If you are unable to commence your graduate research during the session stated in your letter of offer, you may request a deferral.
You can defer your degree for:
- six or 12 months from the original commencement date in your letter of offer, and
- up to one year from your original offer date.
- check your scholarship conditions of award, and
- accept your offer (international students only).
Request a deferral
To defer your offer, email the Graduate Research School evidence that you have deferral approval from your:
- supervisor
- faculty or institute
- home university visiting research student or collaborative doctoral research students only).
Once your deferral request is approved you will receive a new offer letter closer to your start date.
Offer lapse
Your offer will lapse if you:
- enrol in a full award course at any other tertiary institution during the next 12 months
- don’t formally accept your offer within two weeks, or
- are not able to commence after the one-year deferral period. In this case you will need to submit a new application.
