WHO CC involvement: Michele Rumsey
Michele Rumsey has been working as an Advisor to the Nursing Council of Papua New Guinea. Working closely with Dr Nina Joseph, Registrar the regulation processes for PNG nursing and midwifery have been reviewed and streamlined.
This work has included:
- streamlining the registration process and conducting an extensive review of the register and the number of registered practitioners in PNG
- supporting Schools of Nursing Audits, some have not been audited for 30 years
- development of new and revised PNG Nursing Council documentation
- ratifying Midwifery curriculums and registering midwives
- conducting stakeholder Working Groups, to review the Health Practitioner Bill, which will replace the 1980's Medical Act
- developing a Nursing Council Website to hold all relevant Nursing Council forms and annual report http://www.health.gov.pg/pages/nursing.htm
Regulation of nurses and midwives in PNG will impact on two major issues for the health of PNG: safety of care, and workforce planning, among other benefits to promote healthy population. See WHOCC Technical Report Regulation and Health Workforce below.
