Mechanical and mechatronic engineering laboratories 

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) is home to 9 state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to mechanical and mechatronic engineering. These labs, situated within the UTS Robotics Institute and UTS Tech Lab, are at the forefront of technological advancement, offering a wide range of services that cater to students, staff, corporate clients and the public.

These specialised laboratories are designed to test, evaluate and demonstrate various mechanical engineering principles. They also offer comprehensive 3D services, making them invaluable resources for anyone involved in advanced engineering projects.

The Infrastructure Robotics Lab (CB02.02.082)

The Infrastructure Robotics Lab is a leader in robotics research and development aimed at inspecting and maintaining civil structures. The focus here is on reducing risks for workers by enabling them to remotely collect data and perform maintenance tasks in hazardous environments. The lab's research specialties include sensor development, data fusion, machine learning algorithms, and robotics, all geared towards solving both fundamental research challenges and real-world problems.

The Human Robot Interaction Lab (CB02.11.121)

The Human Robot Interaction Lab is pioneering the field of social robotics, which focuses on bringing robots out of industrial settings and into everyday life. This lab explores how humans interact with robots, aiming to make robots more approachable and intuitive. This research is crucial for bridging the gap between robotics technology and its acceptance by the public.

The Intelligent Robotics Lab (CB02.11.101)

In this lab, robots are developed to work alongside humans, assisting them in various tasks while ensuring their safety. These robots are designed to understand and respond to human intentions, making the collaboration between human and machine seamless. The goal is to reduce both the mental and physical strain on human workers, keeping them in control while providing essential support.

The Industry 4.0 Testlab (Tech Lab)

This pioneering lab is Australia’s first industrial microalgae production facility, offering a physical space where partners can trial, explore and showcase Industry 4.0 technologies and processes. It also supports SMEs in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, medical technologies, and energy resources, helping them innovate and grow.

The Acoustics Lab (Tech Lab)

The Acoustics Lab is Australia's most comprehensive engineering acoustics facility. It allows industry partners to test products and assess the acoustic performance of materials and panels. Equipped with Brüel & Kjær microphones and a sophisticated data acquisition system, the lab enables quick and accurate testing to industry standards.

The Vibration Lab (Tech Lab)

Specialising in the development of novel robots, this lab focuses on creating assistive robots capable of operating in unknown, complex, and hostile environments. The lab also develops collaborative robots that work together in teams, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in robotics.
