Tailored HDR workspaces for every research need
The Higher Degree Research (HDR) workspaces at UTS are thoughtfully designed to support the diverse needs of HDR students.
Whether you need a quiet spot for deep analysis, a collaborative area to exchange ideas with peers, or specialised facilties to support your work, these spaces are crucial for fostering productivity, collaboration and focus, providing the ideal environment for you to advance your research.

Activity-based workspaces
The HDR student workspaces are designed to be flexible and supportive, allowing you to make the most of your time at UTS. Whether you need a collaborative area to discuss ideas with peers, a quiet spot for reading and analysis, or a space to plan and write, there’s a perfect place for you.
We’ve created an environment that: moves away from a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to a more flexible, activity-based design ensures you can find the right space for your specific task provides a balanced mix of collaborative and quiet areas accommodates our growing HDR student cohort fosters a sense of community among students.
Standard workstations
Ideal for individual tasks like organising or writing, these conventional workstations come equipped with a monitor, power socket and network connection for internet access and printing. Simply plug in your own or a UTS laptop and get started.

Individual pods
For tasks requiring concentration, our single-person pods offer acoustic privacy while still connecting you to the surrounding workspace.
Each pod includes a power socket, whiteboard and space for your laptop.
Meeting pods
Designed for small group collaborations, these 4-person pods feature curved walls for acoustic privacy, full AV/IT setup, and a large wall-mounted screen controlled via a table console. A whiteboard is also available for brainstorming ideas.

Quiet rooms
Our single-person quiet rooms provide an enclosed space for deep focus on reading, writing, or analysis. Two of these rooms also include landline phones for work-related activities.
While these rooms are designed for quiet work, the glass walls maintain a visual connection with the wider workspace.

Project spaces
These open areas are perfect for brainstorming sessions and collaborative projects that don’t require privacy or quiet.

Collaborative group spaces
These casual, open-access spaces are great for discussion and connection, featuring comfortable seating grouped around small tables.
Kitchen
The large, modern kitchen is a great place to prepare a drink, enjoy lunch, or socialise with peers. It’s equipped with a fridge, microwave, dishwasher and basic kitchenware. Please bring your own food and drinks, but long-life milk portions are provided.
While it’s a social space, remember to:
- keep noise to a reasonable level
- leave the kitchen clean for others
- label your food in the fridge with your name and date
- take responsibility for running/unloading the dishwasher and cleaning the fridge.

Utility area
Adjacent to the kitchen, the utility area includes a multi-function printer that prints, copies and scans. Send your document from a workstation or quiet room, then use the keypad to enter your student number and print. If paper or toner is low, please contact ITU. A phone is available for internal calls.
