• Fabrication workshop arrow_forward_ios

  The fabrication workshop is a large, well-equipped space where students and staff can safely build custom handmade models. 

  The workshop has many tools for working with wood, plastic and metal, including: 

  • bandsaws 
  • drill presses 
  • sanders 
  • lathes 
  • milling machines 
  • routers 
  • a timber thicknesser, and 
  • a panel saw. 

  There is also specialised equipment for research projects by staff and senior students.

  These include: 

  • hydraulic press 
  • plastics granulator 
  • injection moulder 
  • ceramics kiln 
  • sand-blasters 
  • vacuum-former 
  • heat-bender, and 
  • spray-painting tools. 

  Experienced technical staff are available to assist students and supervise the workshop. 

  Who it’s for

  Students and staff. Use of the fabrication workshop is prioritised for DAB students.

  Access to the fabrication workshop requires booking via the DAB resources booking system. For safety reasons, booking is possible only after completion of the fabrication workshop safety induction.

• Soft model workshop arrow_forward_ios

  The soft model studio is a space for light-duty construction and assembly of models made from materials such as foam, foamboard, cardboard and balsawood.  

  Facilities include:  

  • Workbenches 
  • 2 x hot-wire foam cutters 
  • a dry spray-paint booth 
  • wall-mounted foamboard/matboard cutter, and 
  • storage shelves for models. 

  Bookings

  No booking or induction is required, but users of the space must comply with the area's housekeeping rules (a short video presentation is on display).

• Digital Maker Space arrow_forward_ios

  The digital maker space is DAB’s hub for 3D printing and laser cutting. It features: 

  • 6 x 3D printers 
  • 3 x laser cutters, and 
  • 1 x UV printer. 

  The space is usually used for making prototypes, models, graphic presentations and fashion prototypes. 

  It’s a supervised, self-service space where you will be trained to use the equipment. You can book the space when you need it.  

  Who it’s for

  DAB students (who have completed an induction).

  The undergraduate architecture studio is a flexible, open learning and teaching space available to all undergraduate students for making and presenting.

• Master of Architecture studio arrow_forward_ios

  As a postgraduate architecture student, you'll have a dedicated space in the Master of Architecture studio. It’s a flexible teaching and learning space with individual workstations, storage and places to showcase your work. 

  The studio is versatile and well-equipped, with 31 Mac Pros, projectors, digital whiteboards and wireless internet access to support your learning. 

  Who it’s for 

  Postgraduate architecture students.

• Fashion studio arrow_forward_ios

  The fashion studio is your dedicated space for working over a range of specialist areas such as couture, ready-to-wear, swimwear and sportswear. 

  The facility includes: 

  • 2 x design studios for flat patternmaking, cutting and construction including specially designed mannequins for drape 
  • 23 x straight sewers (industrial sewing machines), and 
  • equipment for a range of fabrications such as stretch, wovens, naturals and synthetics. 

  Fashion and textiles students can also access specialised machines in the sewing workshop including: 

  • Brother Buttonhole 
  • Juki Buttonhole 
  • cover-stitch machine 
  • binding machine  
  • over-lockers 
  • baby lock machines 
  • Leather/upholstery, and 
  • fusing machines.

  Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles students (following induction).

• Textiles workshop arrow_forward_ios

  The textiles workshop is a spacious, well-equipped space where you can try different processes, including: 

  • silkscreen, transfer and sublimation printing and fabric dyeing, and 
  • image-making techniques such as photographic, hand-drawn and half-tone printing 

  Who it’s for

  Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles and textiles elective students.

• Knit workshop arrow_forward_ios

  The knit workshop is used for classes and includes a Shima Seiki knit machine (used by experienced operator only). 

  The knit lab is a newly expanded area where students are introduced to machine knitting. It includes flatbed knitting machines equipped with a range of accessories, as well as Tanaka dry-felting machines. 

  Who it’s for

  Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles and textiles elective students.

• Photomedia studio arrow_forward_ios

  The photomedia studio is equipped with everything you need for professional-grade photography, including lighting studios, green screens and darkrooms for traditional black and white photographic printing. It supports analog and digital formats. 

  The photomedia studio includes: 

  • 3 x large lighting studios – all three have backdrop paper, product tables, lighting including mono-blocks and floor packs, and two have full cycloramas with controllable LED lighting 
  • equipment store containing a wide range of photo, video and audio equipment for students to borrow 
  • wet darkrooms equipped for black and white processing and printing  
  • an imaging computing laboratory with several film scanners for various formats 
  • up-to-date equipment such as full-frame mirrorless and medium-format Hasselblad cameras 
  • tutorial space, and 
  • product and small model photography facilities. 

  Technical staff are always available to help staff and students.

• Studio 5A arrow_forward_ios

  Shaped by industry standards, Studio 5A is a permanent, immersive space for visual communication and product design students.  

  It includes personal workstations and storage, collaboration and presentation zones, pin-up spaces, and breakout areas to support different learning styles. Flexible AV resources such as movable screens, mini photography studios and modular sound systems are also available to help with your projects. 

  Shared materials, essential tools and comfortable breakout spaces, such as kitchenettes, lounges, reading rooms and vending machines, create a relaxed and informal atmosphere.  

  Key features include: 

  • dedicated studio pods with a total of 240 desks  
  • dedicated working studios for developing projects 
  • reading room and studio library / archive 
  • soft-model area for basic 3-dimensional modelling 
  • mini photography studio 
  • informal study rooms   
  • two presentation areas, each with 120-seat capacity 
  • office spaces for use by researchers and educators 
  • private study rooms 
  • breakout seating areas 
  • social spaces 
  • informal exhibition spaces for showcasing designs, and
