Some processes are slightly different when you’re supervising a PhD candidate as part of the Collaborative Doctoral Research Degree Program.
The Collaborative Doctoral Research Degree Program (CDRDP) supports students to pursue a PhD at both UTS and one of our international partner universities. Students divide their time between UTS and the partner institution and establish a joint supervision arrangement at both institutions.

The CDRDP can give students invaluable international experience, as well as the opportunity to take advantage of UTS’s strong industry and international partner links. We have established institutional agreements with various international partner universities.
Types of students you may supervise:
- Outbound students: whose home university is UTS.
- Inbound students: whose home university is one of UTS’s partner universities.

Your role as a supervisor
The supervision process for Collaborative Doctoral Research Degree Program candidates is the same as other PhD candidates. Outbound students may spend slightly less time (2–3 years) at UTS, and inbound students will spend a minimum of 12 months at UTS.
You will still be required to work with your student and their supervisors from partner universities to complete the stage assessments and reviews of progress required as part of their UTS degree. If your student will be overseas during an assessment period, please contact your faculty for advice.
Thesis submission & examination requirements
The thesis and examination process will vary from the standard process. It will depend on what is agreed with the other institution and supervisor. For example, students may be required to submit one thesis to both institutions or develop separate theses for each.
This will be fully outlined in the:
- overarching collaboration agreement with the other institution, and
- student’s individual candidate agreement that is issued with their UTS letter of offer.

Application process
You may be approached by a PhD candidate who wants to do this program, or you may identify an opportunity for one of your candidates. Candidates can apply for this program if they are new or currently enrolled at UTS or a partner institution.
The application process is different for inbound and outbound students, but you will need to be involved in both.
