 Information for research supervisors

Help graduate researchers address the world’s wicked problems

As a supervisor, you’ll have the privilege of mentoring your candidates and watching them grow into independent researchers who make meaningful contributions to knowledge. You’ll also become part of a community of UTS staff who are committed to developing the next generation of professionals and researchers who can lead our global society.

Graduate research supervisors are classified into distinct roles, each contributing to the mentorship and support of research students.

These include principal supervisors, co-supervisors, assistant supervisors, and external supervisors, each with specific responsibilities in guiding research projects.

  • Co-supervisor

A supervisor who contributes to the academic guidance and supervision of a graduate research student and may sometimes act as principal supervisor for administrative matters.

  • Assistant supervisor

A salaried professional UTS staff member who provides specialist support and advice to the student.

  • External supervisor

A non-UTS employee who provides specialist experience and advice to the student.
