When you choose to study in person at our Sydney campus, you’ll be at the heart of a vibrant innovation hub. You’ll have the opportunity to spend time with your supervisor in person, and access to our student spaces, specialist facilities, community and services.

Depending on your research topic, you may even work from one of our industry-focussed precincts: Hub or The Kidman Centre

Immerse yourself in the social side of UTS by joining clubs and societies and meeting other research candidates at our Research Café.

Our in-person services are also include a gym, on-campus housing and medical centre.

We pride ourselves on our partnerships with other institutions – locally and internationally. That’s why we offer a number of opportunities for you to do a PhD or Research Masters in collaboration with another institution. Depending on the program, it might include conducting research at another institution, joint supervision or being based embedded in an organisation. 
 
Our Global PhD is an opportunity for you to join an international research team that is making significant impact to the global economies, environments and societies. 
 
The Collaborative Doctoral Research Degree Program helps you to pursue a PhD across UTS and a global institution, with joint supervision. 
 
In the Industry Doctorate Program you’ll be immersed in your partner’s organisation and work with industry colleagues who want to apply your research as it’s produced.  
 
Our Impact PhD gives you the opportunity to work with one or more partners – both globally and locally – from not-for-profits to NGOs, governments to community organisations to apply your research in real-time.

We support you to develop your future as a researcher in a global context – without applying for a visa or subletting your apartment. 
 
The PhD by distance mode might be right for you if: 

  • your research is based internationally but you want access to UTS's world-leading researchers and reputation  
  • you're required to complete a PhD for your career but you don't want to relocate; or  
  • you want to expand your global networks to create real-world research impact.

Your research degree will have the same stage assessments, timeline expectations and commitment to our student rules as on-campus students. You’ll get access to a range of student services, including a panel of world-leading UTS supervisors and free training and support

Be a visiting research student

If you’re studying a PhD or Research Masters at a different institution, you can spend time at UTS as a visiting research student. You can work alongside our experts, access our facilities and embed yourself in our community.  
 
To apply, find a supervisor and connect with the relevant faculty to organise your visit. For further information, speak to the Graduate Research School.
