We recognise that life doesn’t stop when you start a PhD or Research Masters. That’s why we offer free support for all aspects of your life throughout your degree, so you can focus on producing your high-impact research.
Whether it’s support for careers, your business, upskilling or your wellness, we encourage you to make the most of it!

1. Help to build your networks
Surround yourself with like-minded people and build relationships that will last beyond your degree.
You can get access to:
- Research Café: Meet other students and academics, exchange ideas, set up research collaborations and get advice.
- Academic conferences: Access up to $3000 of funding to help you to attend conferences aligned to your research.
- Clubs and societies: Come together over a shared interest (think: camping or bubble tea), discipline, sport (think: Quidditch or gridiron), or belief.
- Teams channel: Ask questions and connect with other UTS research students from anywhere and at any time.
- UTS Startups: Connect with early-stage founders in this supportive community of entrepreneurs.

2. Free training & upskilling
Developing expertise can require new skills across multiple disciplines.
You can access:
- Our Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning, a one-year course to enhance your teaching skills.
- Any undergraduate subject: you can choose to enrol in the subject and be assessed, or to sit in on the classes without being formally enrolled. It’s a great way to extend your learning, either in your area of research or in other disciplines that interest you.
- Workshops that help you build fundamental skills, including an understanding of research principles, methodologies, communication and career pathways.
- One-on-one support from our librarians who can help you navigate referencing, literature searching, copyright, and publishing.
- Support for academic writing and English-language skills.
- Guidance in ethics applications and procedures, which is a critical (and sometimes confusing) part of your research to navigate.

3. Amplify your impact
As you develop your research, you’ll be given opportunities to apply or communicate your research, including:
- Industry placements that can help shape your research thinking in a real-world context, enhance your networks and diversify your CV.
- The Three-Minute Thesis competition that encourages you to distil your research into a short talk in front of other researchers and funding bodies.
- Teaching opportunities that strengthen your communication and presentation skills and help you shape a new generation of students (Talk to your faculty to see what’s available).
- Features in faculty and Graduate Research School communications to external partners.

4. Access to world-class facilities
We are home to some of the most sought-after facilities in industry and academia.
You can access:
- Study spaces, labs, researcher student desks and free WiFi at our conveniently located campus located in the heart of Sydney’s innovation precinct. Take a tour.
- UTS Library’s extensive digital catalogue and databases. And, if we don’t have a resource, you can request it!

5. Support for your wellness & future
We get it, life can take turns we don’t always expect. We have free support services to help you navigate all aspects of your life.
This includes:
- Free counselling to help you manage challenges or develop important skills to manage stress.
- Personalised advice from UTS Careers about your future.
