Master of Teaching in Secondary Education

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have the following:

• Completed Australian bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctorate, or overseas equivalent, with at least one major discipline study relevant to the teaching area, as described by the NSW curriculum and consistent with NESA Subject Content Knowledge Requirements AND Motivation and suitability for teaching as outlined by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL)

Motivation and suitability for teaching is demonstrated through a personal statement outlining interest in and understanding of the course.

Students who have studied overseas may be required to meet additional requirements set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to qualify as teachers in NSW.

For applicants with a bachelor’s degree, the degree must contain at least one major discipline study and may contain a minor discipline study. A minor discipline study qualifies students to teach a second or additional subject. A major discipline study equates to six subjects, with no more than two subjects at first-year level and no fewer than two subjects at third-year level. A minor discipline study equates to four subjects, with no more than two subjects at the first-year level.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall, with a minimum of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules, and a reading and writing score of 7.0; or TOEFL iBT: 102-109 overall, a listening score of 28, a speaking score of 26, a reading score of 24 and a writing score of 27; or PTE: 73-78 overall with a 79 in both the speaking and listening, and a reading and writing score of 65; or C1A/C2P: 191-199 overall with 200 in both the speaking and listening, and a reading and writing score of 185.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) as a recognised secondary school teaching qualification. To gain employment as a teacher in NSW schools, graduands must meet the requirements of the NESA, including language proficiency.
