What you’ll study
You can complete this postgraduate qualification in 12 months full-time or over two years part-time. Within this program, you’ll complete five core units to build critical knowledge of theories about multilingual learners and language, and teaching methodologies and their practical applications. You’ll also develop specialist knowledge to begin your career in the adult and vocational education sector, schools sector or the private and overseas English language teaching sectors to teach English as an additional language, literacy and/or numeracy.
You’ll need to choose a specialist stream aligned with the sector in which you wish to work. These are teaching literacy, numeracy and English as an additional language in adult and vocational education colleges; teaching English as an additional language or dialect in primary or secondary schools; and teaching academic English to post-secondary students. You’ll gain first hand insight in your chosen field by undertaking one or both of your practicum placements in this sector.

Your future career
As a graduate of the UTS Graduate Diploma in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, you’ll be able to commence and further your career as an English language and/or adult literacy and numeracy teacher. You’ll contribute to a field that is built on principles of social justice. As an educator in this field you may support recently arrived migrants in Australia to develop skills in English to settle in their new country or adult learners to develop their literacy and numeracy to lead more independent lives, gain employment or pursue further education. You may work with multilingual primary or second school students to develop English as an additional language or dialect to succeed in school. Alternatively, you may teach academic English to international students in Australia or overseas to help them gain admission into and succeed in courses where English is the language of instruction.
Please note that to become a teacher of English as an additional language or dialect in an Australian school, you must already hold an Australian recognised teaching qualification.
