Project: Improving the Quality of Disaster and Emergency Nursing Care, China Ministry of Health, Nursing Division, Department of Medical Administration 2008

Lisa Colon in collaboration with colleagues in Beijing and Chengdu, worked with earthquake survivors. She provided a short intensive skills-updating and skills application training for 60 experienced nurses (with ER/trauma backgrounds) from the 25 Provinces in China receiving earthquake survivors. Teams of three nursing leaders with emergency/trauma experience were trained as trainers in order to carry on training in settlements. Implementation of the training course was with the MOH, PUMC, Chengdu, West China Huaxi Hospital in Sichuan as well as China Nursing Association and Shandong University.

The objectives were to improve skills in rapid trauma assessment and care; wound care prevention and management, as well as standard precautions and environmental cleaning, and psychosocial assessment and support knowledge and practices of nursing personnel of temporary settlements for earthquake disaster survivors, through:

  • The adaptation and translation of WHO and related evidence-based protocols for rapid trauma assessment wound prevention, assessment and management, standard precautions and psychosocial assessment and support guidelines for use in temporary settlement areas, as well as a recording and surveillance system.
  • The training of a minimum of 75 nurse trainers (teams of three representing 25 provinces) in evidence-based rapid trauma assessment, wound prevention, assessment, management and associated standard precautions; psychosocial assessment.
