Papua New Guinea Schools of Nursing Audit – AusAID

The WHO CC UTS was commissioned by JTA International Health and HIV Implementation Services Provider (HHISP), funded by AusAID to undertake an audit along with a team of consultants in collaboration with the Office of Higher Education (OHE) and the National Department of Health (NDoH) of the eight Schools of Nursing (SON) in Papua New Guinea from 1st September until 31st October, 2012. The audit was conducted on site at each SON and specifically looked at:

  • staff and student demographics, including finances, teaching workload, student staff ratios, and workforce age and gender;
  • the educational program undertaken and curriculum;
  • the clinical facilities and clinical teaching/learning of the nursing students;
  • exploration of library facilities, demonstration room and clinical teaching equipment; and,
  • infrastructure audit, including: general site assessment and location of buildings, staff housing and student accommodation and civil works infrastructure, eg water and power.

The objectives of this audit were to:

  • Utilise the Papua New Guinea National Framework for the Accreditation, Monitoring and Evaluation of Nursing and Midwifery Education Programs (quality)
  • Assess the capacity of each SON to effectively double their training output (quantity)
  • Identify and categorise needs (human and material resources and whether immediate, medium or long term) in order for each institution to meet required minimum standards.
  • Provide recommendations.
