SPCNMOA Meeting April 2008

The SPCNMOA meeting was jointly co-planned and sponsored with the WHO/WPR, AusAID, NSW Department of Health and other partners. Some of the achievements of the SPCNMOA meeting were:

  • The successful launch of the WHO CC for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Development.
  • The SPCNMOA constitution was ratified.
  • The Steering Group was established.
  • It was agreed that monetary contributions would be sought from member countries to enable the SPCNMOA to work towards funding for self-sufficiency and to fulfil its objectives.
  • Review of WHO Strategic Action Plan for Nursing and Midwifery Development in the Pacific Island Countries. Members identified areas of work required to fulfil Objective 2.1 Research and policy analysis. The areas requiring work were:
    1. Education: A resolution (Strengthening Nursing and Midwifery Education in the Pacific Island Nations) was endorsed.
    2. Leadership: Strategies were shared about building leadership capacity and recent WHO nursing scholar spoke on the importance of CNOs understanding, implementing and influencing policy.
    3. Regulation: It was agreed that there needs to be analysis of regulatory frameworks across the region.
    4. Data literacy: The WHO CC will look at obtaining an AusAID fellowship to build capacity in the use and analysis of data to support decision-making and policy. The WHO CC was also requested to investigate the use of research within the region which could inform countries as to how to improve the use of data; how to translate recommendations into actions; and knowledge transfer into practice.
  • Networking amongst CNOs and educational representatives has been enhanced by: building on and extending previous work; committing to new projects; developing recommendations and setting up an email list server.
  • In relation to pandemic and disaster preparedness there was a presentation, group discussion and a resolution in progress. The resolution relates to collaboration with partners to improve the: Capacity of nurses and midwives to deal with disasters and public health emergencies, including those related to climate change.
  • It was ratified that the next SPCNMOA Meeting be held in 2010.
