Study Migration Law

Open to both law and non-law graduates, the UTS Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice is the first step to an impactful, people-focused career as a migration agent. Unique in its approach, this course can be completed in just one year and combines essential theoretical and legal knowledge with hands-on experience, helping you build crucial practical competencies.

You'll be mentored by industry experts, giving you up-to-date insights and advice. Delivered entirely online, you'll have the ultimate flexibility to undertake the course content at the time and pace that suits you. On graduation, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to sit the Capstone Assessment in order to be registered as an Australian migration agent.

What you’ll study

In this program, you'll acquire acute knowledge and advanced practical skills in the field of migration law. Through just four subjects for law graduates or six for non-law graduates, you'll get crucial insights into Australia's migration system.
 
A range of integrated assessments and tasks will see you learn about the validity and eligibility criteria for different types of visas. You’ll study complex migration matters, including visa application refusals, visa cancellations, merits and judicial review processes, legislation and policy and other critical and up-to-date aspects of migration law.

    Migration Law and Practice subjects

    You’ll begin your studies by building a comprehensive foundational understanding of Australia’s migration laws and visa systems. You’ll then get specialised insight into different visa subclasses and compliance processes before completing a hands-on internship capstone, preparing you for professional practice.

Through this expert-led program, you'll study the laws, regulations and procedural instructions that apply to Australian migration law. You'll be exposed to a variety of visa categories, such as family, employer-sponsored, skilled migration, student and bridging visas, to learn how to support migrants and enhance their chances of success.

Industry accreditation

The prescribed knowledge requirements for registration as a migration agent with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) in Australia can be fulfilled by completing all accredited subjects in this course and passing an external capstone assessment approved and facilitated externally by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority.

Non-lawyer graduates must also pass the Migrations Agents Capstone Assessment approved and facilitated by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority and meet other registration requirements.
