Faculty-led tour to the Chinese University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), Beijing.

Destination: Beijing, China
Host Institution: China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL)
Tentative time: 3 - 16 January 2024
Led by: Professor Gao Xiang

Program overview

The Faculty of Law is offering students the opportunity to visit and study in Beijing with one of our partner universities, the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL).

CUPL is a public research university established in 1952 in Beijing, China. It is the top law university in China, praised as “the most prestigious law school for legal talent cultivation in China” and within the top 40 worldwide. It has a strong emphasis on the research and teaching of law, politics, economics, management, sociology, history, and philosophy.

CUPL will host a two-week immersive law program running from 3rd – 16th January 2024. Learning from CUPL’s prestigious law academics, you will gain an in-depth understanding of Chinese Commercial Law, covering subjects like Introduction to Chinese Legal System, Chinese Constitution Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Contract Law, Foreign Trade Law, Foreign Investment Law & Company Law.

Beyond the enriching academic experience, you will be able to immerse yourself in the captivating Chinese culture through guided tours to iconic landmarks, engaging field trips to courts and law firms, and the chance to engage with CUPL students and staff during classroom activities. The journey will be further enhanced with an opening ceremony and a farewell banquet hosted by CUPL.

Selected students will be accompanied by Professor Xiang Gao, Dean and Professor of Law at the College of Comparative Law, CUPL.

Eligibility

This program is open to all UTS students. However, in order to be eligible for academic credit, UTS Law students must enrol in International and Comparative Study in Law (76099 for UG students, or 78293 for JD students) and meet the prerequisites for the subject.

Students from other faculties who want to gain academic credit for this program will need to discuss this option with their home faculty.

How to apply

To be considered for this program, submit an expression of interest to the Faculty of Law outlining why you would like to participate in the program and with a copy of a current academic transcript. This can be an unofficial copy.

EOI submissions will be open from 10 August until 7 September 2023.

If eligible, selected students will then be able to apply via Global Mobility Programs for financial assistance.

Costs and funding

The program costs are approximately $5,150 but are dependent on enrolment numbers and due to
payment of fees to CUPL in USD, final costs are subject to exchange rate changes.

This fee covers academic lectures, accommodation, transportation in Beijing, airport shuttles, tickets for guided visits, lunches when you have classes, an opening ceremony and farewell banquet hosted by CUPL.

Students taking the program for academic credit may be eligible to receive New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants of up to $3,000 and Global Short Programs Travel Scholarships of up to $1,000. Read more about financial assistance options.

Questions

There will be an information session on 17 August 2023 with Dr Renata Grossi (Mobility Coordinator), Associate Professor Grace Li (Assoc Dean Internationalisation), Nikayla Brown (UTS Global Mobility Programs Support Officer) and Professor Gao Xiang (CUPL). Register for the info session
