Work on a ‘real-world’ project with an international host organisation. This can be done in three ways: 1) Find your own internship; 2) Choose a UTS recognised internship provider; or 3) Choose a faculty supplied placement. The subjects are offered in Spring* and Summer.

Undergraduate: International Legal Internship (76098)

Postgraduate: Global Professional Experience Project (78295)

Subject requirements: Participation in an internship for a minimum of 20 days (4 weeks) as well as attendance at pre-departure workshop, completing reflective journals and a post-internship presentation.

How to apply: Apply through CareerHub. 76098 (UG) application and 78295 (PG) application.

Application deadlines:

  • July (Winter) 2025 - COB, Friday 18 April 2025
  • Summer 2025 - COB, Friday 19 September 2025

Three ways to access an international internship

1. Self-sourced placements
  • Find your own placement at an eligible international legal organisation. See the criteria for self-sourced internship opportunities.
  • Submit an application through CareerHub including a letter of invitation from the placement host that describes the work you will be doing, the supervision you will be receiving, and the placement dates.
  • Funding: UTS Global Short Programs (GSP) can provide eligible students with scholarships of $1000. In addition you can use OS-HELP, a Government-funded loan scheme to assist you to pay for overseas course-related opportunities, paid back  along with your HECS-HELP debt. If you are doing an international law placement also consider applying to the Australian and New Zealand Society for International Law (ANZSIL) Internship Support Program.
2. University-approved programs
  • UTS Global Short Programs (GSP) have approved certain internship providers who supply legal internship opportunities. Search for a program and apply via the GSP database. Applications for the ACICIS program for Summer 2025/26 close on 16 May 2025. Please find information on how to apply for this program here.
  • Once you have applied for a GSP internship, also complete the application to the Faculty of Law for entry to the subject 76098 (undergraduate) or 78295 (postgraduate) on CareerHub.
  • Once your placement has been approved provide the Faculty of Law at LawInternships@uts.edu.au with a letter from the placement host that describes the work you will be doing, the supervision you will be receiving, and the placement dates.
  • Funding: See the GSP approved provider or contact GSP for more information.
3. Faculty-provided placements
  • Please contact the Internship Program Head Prof Beth Goldblatt at Beth.Goldblatt@uts.edu.au for any questions about the Faculty-provided placement opportunities. Submit an application through CareerHub listing your preferred placements and the Faculty will determine whether to put you forward to the placement organisation.
  • Funding:  UTS Global Short Programs (GSP) can provide eligible students with scholarships of $1000. In addition you can use OS-HELP, a Government-funded loan scheme to assist you to pay for overseas course-related opportunities, paid back  along with your HECS-HELP debt.

Capital Punishment Justice Project - USA

Capital Punishment Justice Project (CPJP) (formerly Reprieve Australia) stands for a world without the death penalty – in all circumstances for all people. CPJP works with our partner organisations, volunteers, the Australian public, and key stakeholders to develop legal and policy solutions that help save lives. We help people who are facing the death penalty access legal expertise, humanitarian assistance, diplomatic guidance, and support for their family members. This is achieved through strong relationships with anti-death penalty organisations, lawyers and advocates, to best support them in the work they do. We also work to ensure that Australia’s well-documented policy against the death penalty is upheld, always, and conduct advocacy to raise awareness of issues concerning the death penalty.

One of the most effective and immediate ways to assist those on death row is through the allocation of practical resources – dedicated and skilled volunteers. Since we began in 2001, CPJP has sent volunteers to work at capital defence offices, where they provide administrative support to lawyers, investigators and mitigation specialists by managing and filing materials, conducting research, visiting prisons, attending meetings with witnesses and facilitating contact between the accused and their families.

Typically, our student volunteers will meet the costs of travel, visas, accommodation, and other expenses related to volunteering overseas, either themselves or through funding available through their university or government assistance. For potential volunteers who may otherwise not be able to meet the full costs, the Julian Wagner Memorial Fund have made funds available to CPJP to assist with a portion of the cost.

This is a 12 week placement that will be run over the Summer Session. Students should apply directly to CPJP and if accepted, apply via careerhub to have the placement count towards the subject. Please find information on how to apply directly to CPJP here.
