What you’ll study

This degree offers you the option to major in either Environmental Biotechnology, where you'll study topics like pollution mitigation, environmental remediation and renewable energies, or Medical Biotechnology, where you'll study molecular biology, microbiology, human genetics and more.

You will also build your specialised knowledge of medical or environmental biotechnology through your core major studies, with the option to undertake an internship for academic credit. Elective units will see you broaden your educational experience beyond your domain, allowing you to choose subjects from other disciplines such as arts, business and law.

Typical course program

The program outline below shows an example program for the Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology based on a full-time study load, which consists of four subjects per semester. Please note that your exact program may differ based on your unique circumstances, such as your commencement date, subject selections and recognition of prior learning.

  1. First year

    In your first year of study, you will complete core science subjects relevant to your chosen major. This will give you the essential foundational knowledge you need throughout your science degree.
  2. Second year

    Your second year will see you begin to specialise your learning. You will begin studying the core subjects related to the Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology, such as an Introduction to Biotechnology, and you will begin to focus on subjects in either the medical or environmental major.
  3. Third year

    You’ll finalise your studies by completing any remaining core subjects in biotechnology, such as bioreactors and bioprocessing, and depending on your major, either medical or environmental biotechnology. You will also enjoy the chance to try out other disciplines in your electives and build collaborative skills in your transdisciplinary elective.
  4. Honours

    Eligible students can apply for the Bachelor of Science (Honours). You will be required to complete an additional year of study to attain your Honours.
