What you’ll study
In your Communication degree, you’ll complete a variety of core and major stream subjects, building your knowledge and skills in writing, editing and publishing. You’ll also have the opportunity to add a second major or enhance your learning through Communications electives.
In your International Studies program, you’ll study your culture, country and language of choice, choosing from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. As a capstone, you’ll get to pursue either (1) an international honours research project during a 12-month study abroad experience, (2) a 6-month global exchange and an internship where you complete an industry engagement project, or (3) an internship and industry engagement project with the option of a short study abroad experience (2-6 weeks).

First year
You’ll commence your studies by undertaking an array of subjects in your core Communications and major streams, learning about narrative, writing and editing and digital literacies. You’ll also learn about intercultural communication as you prepare to begin your international Studies. -
Second year
In your second year, you’ll learn about publishing cultures, screen story and adaptations. You’ll also begin studying your country and language of focus and pursue either a second major or electives in your communications stream. -
Third year
This year, you’ll continue to advance your language abilities and understanding of your chosen country. You’ll continue working towards your second major or else pursue more disciplinary electives, choosing from topics like multimedia features, news now and strategic communication. -
Fourth year
Your fourth year will see you pursue your choice of International Studies pathway. Engage in honours research during a 12-month study abroad experience, or experience 6-months of global exchange at a UTS partner university and undertake an internship where you develop vital career skills in an industry research project. Options for shorter study abroad experiences (2-6 weeks) are also available or you can choose to complete all of your fourth-year subjects at UTS. -
Fifth year
In your final year, you’ll conclude any remaining core, elective or sub-major units. You’ll produce both a professional preparation project and a writing project, where you’ll apply all your learnings to create an original piece of work for publication.
Course highlights
Throughout this program, you'll establish skills in writing and storytelling across formats like fiction, nonfiction and screenwriting, plus professional-grade competencies in editing, publishing and research. Additionally, you'll attain extensive language capabilities and cultural knowledge of your chosen country, which you’ll hone further through your choice of pathway project.
