What you’ll study
This program will see you examine the foundations of Communication, providing essential context for your specialised studies. Then, in your Writing and Publishing major, you’ll go in-depth to learn about narrative, writing and editing, all while advancing your practical skills, professional knowledge and creative thinking capabilities.
Disciplinary electives will allow you to broaden your knowledge in topics such as media law and ethics, digital audiences, and creative advertising. You’ll also have the opportunity to enhance your expertise through a second major in areas like journalism, media business, or strategic communication.

First year
Commencing your studies, you’ll work to establish a comprehensive foundational understanding of writing and editing, narrative and creative non-fiction. You’ll also get insight into the wider context of the Communication discipline and begin working towards your choice of secondary major. -
Second year
This year, you’ll study screenwriting and adaptations, then build your acute knowledge of the contemporary Australian publishing industry. You’ll continue your second major or choose to broaden your knowledge through electives like design thinking, global cinema and creative advertising. -
Third year
In your final year, you’ll complete any remaining core, elective or major units. You’ll also undertake a professional pathway project and a major writing project, giving you the opportunity to sharpen your employability and practical writing competencies prior to graduation.
Course highlights
This program will build your knowledge of Australian and global publishing contexts, as well as writing and storytelling across an array of formats, like fiction and non-fiction, screenwriting, digital content and games. You’ll also acquire acute capabilities in critical thinking, research, editing, publishing and storytelling in broader contexts.
