In this degree, you’ll blend arts and international studies, developing both practical, studio-based capabilities in animation and establishing the knowledge and language skills you need to kick-start an exciting, creative international future.

What you’ll study

Within this program, you’ll study a range of core units in Animation Production, building knowledge and capabilities in areas like 2D and 3D animation, editing, worldbuilding, character design, performance and narrative structures. Media-based units will help you acquire vital industry insights, and you’ll also enhance your learning with disciplinary electives of your choice.

Then, through your International Studies, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the country and culture of your choice, attaining extensive language competencies as well. You’ll have the opportunity to choose from six destinations: Germany, China, France, Italy, Japan, or Spain. This full-year experience includes an honours level in-country fieldwork project, offering a comprehensive immersion in your selected culture and language.

  1. First year

    You’ll commence your studies with core animation units, where you’ll get hands-on in the studio to build foundational knowledge of the discipline. An intercultural communication subject will form a valuable basis for your international and cultural studies.
  2. Second year

    This year, you’ll learn to create animated characters, focusing on design and rigging. You’ll commence studying your language and culture of choice and establish a comprehensive fundamental understanding of the contemporary political, social and cultural landscape of your chosen country.
  3. Third year

    You’ll continue honing your language skills and cultural insights in your third year as you prepare for your international honours exchange. Your animation studies will see you learn about narrative, communicating ideas and responsible representation within media.
  4. Fourth year

    In your fourth year, you’ll undertake your thrilling In-Country Studies program, attending one of UTS’ many partner institutions in your focus country. While there, you’ll complete a fieldwork-based project, meeting the study requirements for the conferral of your honours.
  5. Fifth year

    You’ll finalise your studies with any remaining core or elective animation units. You’ll also undertake a hands-on project with an industry partner, creating and producing a short high-quality animation project and obtaining job-ready capabilities as you look to launch your career.
