What you'll study

Within this program, you’ll complete an array of core subjects, building your essential competencies and knowledge of the Animation Production discipline. With a focus on practical studio-based learning, you’ll develop capabilities in reaching an audience through character driven narratives, 2D and 3D design, and hybrid animation performance, concluding your studies with a hands-on project where you’ll work with industry partners to design and pitch your own animated series, whilst completing you own original capstone short film.

You’ll also get the chance to enhance your professional skills through communication and digital media studies and discover areas of particular interest with your choice of disciplinary electives.

First year

Commencing your studies, you’ll get hands-on with introductory studio studies in animation design and language. You’ll also benefit from class-based learning, building insights into the digital media industry, and get to curate your own course with your first elective unit.
Second year

This year, you’ll enhance your knowledge of narrative and character design, engaging in experimentation and advanced rigging. You’ll also establish competencies in communicating differences and undertake another elective, chosen from topics such as global cinema, storyboard development and creative advertising.
Third year

You’ll complete any remaining units and enhance your knowledge in 2D or 3D animation design and practice. Your Industry Project will provide a capstone to your learning, giving you the chance to produce a short, animated film in collaboration with a partner organisation.

First year

Students learn to develop, pitch and defend ideas, and ultimately create original content for film, TV, advertising and other screen-based media that will engage global audiences.

One of the benefits of studying our Bachelor of Animation Production is the link to UTS’s existing industry connections that help give students that competitive advantage. Students have the opportunity to work with live projects and active partners, such as ABC Podcasts, VIVID, the Australia Piano Quartet, and other collaborations with international universities at the Annecy MIFA campus etc. UTS also has long-standing relationships with Sydney's local animation studios such as Flying Bark Productions, Mighty Nice, Cheeky Little Media, Dave Enterprises, and Animal Logic which offer students multiple opportunities to engage in practice while studying.

UTS understands that teamwork is at the heart of the animation industry which is why a studio-led approach is used to create a high-intensity practical environment where students learn how to work with their peers in a professional and collaborative atmosphere, melding creativity, technology and research.
Your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a score between 0.00 and 99.95. It shows you how you rank compared to all the students in your year group in New South Wales. A selection rank combines your ATAR with any other adjustment points that make up your overall university entrance score. Your selection rank may differ from university to university, depending on the adjustment points granted to you at each institution.

Transdisciplinary Electives integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines, allowing you to approach complex problems from a range of perspectives.

By combining methods and insights from various disciplines, transdisciplinary learning often leads to breakthrough ideas and creative innovations that may not be possible within the confines of a single discipline.

If you find yourself rapt by the world of innovation – you can pair your core degree with a Diploma in Innovation, graduating with two qualifications in the same timeframe.

In both instances, you’ll work on a real-world challenge presented by an industry partner organisation – partners who often create career pathways for our graduates.

2025 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students

All offers for domestic undergraduate students are for Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.
