What you’ll study
This course is designed to be completed in five years, full-time. In Animation Production, you’ll undertake core subjects to acquire competence in 2D, 3D and hybrid animation. You’ll enhance your understanding of the media industry and curate your learning with your choice of electives.
In your International Studies program, you’ll study your culture, country and language of choice, choosing from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. As a capstone, you’ll get to pursue either (1) an international honours research project during a 12-month study abroad experience, (2) a 6-month global exchange and an internship where you complete an industry engagement project, or (3) an internship and industry engagement project with the option of a short study abroad experience (2 - 6 weeks).

First year
In your first year, you’ll focus largely on animation, where you’ll begin developing hands-on capabilities through your studio sessions and learn about 2D and hybrid animation. You’ll also complete a subject on intercultural communication to launch your international studies. -
Second year
You’ll continue your animation studies, focusing on character design and advanced rigging. You’ll also begin your studies of the language and culture of your choice, establishing a solid foundational understanding of the culture as well as basic language competencies. -
Third year
This year, you’ll study narrative, learning how to communicate ideas in a way that is responsible, respectful and inclusive. You’ll continue honing your language abilities and insights into your chosen country and undertake your choice of media-based elective. -
Fourth year
Your fourth year will see you pursue your choice of International Studies pathway. Engage in honours research during a 12 month study abroad experience, or experience 6 months of global exchange at a UTS partner university and undertake an internship where you develop vital career skills in an industry research project. Options for shorter study abroad experiences (2-6 weeks) are also available or you can choose to complete all of your fourth year subjects at UTS. -
Fifth year
In your last year of study, you’ll conclude your animation studies, finalising any remaining core or elective units. You’ll also complete an industry-based project, where you’ll work with one of our partner organisations to produce an original and high quality animated short project.
Course highlights
This program will equip you with practical skills in animation, character design and narrative and shape your critical and creative thinking, helping you find inspiration, develop ideas and bring your stories to life. You will also attain advanced abilities and knowledge of your language and culture of choice, as well as intercultural skills applicable across professional contexts.
