Project Management Course Fundamentals

This advanced project management course provides project managers with the advanced tools necessary for managing projects effectively, within the context of the challenges posed by a rapidly changing world, characterised by competing demands for resources and pressures from stakeholders in all directions.

This project management course will strengthen your leadership role in projects and further build your skills in project governance and planning. Effective engagement of project stakeholders will be addressed, including managing scope definition and dealing with the myriad of changes that can arise in bringing a project to successful completion. An overarching principle will include the utilisation of models to build effective teams for achieving project outcomes.

With the growing complexity of projects, policies and programs  - it takes more than natural people skills to be a leader. Progress in your career and learn the skills/knowledge needed to be a leader in project management.

Course content

This advanced project management course will cover the following content:

  • The range of Project Management approaches available
  • The suitability of each of the Project Management approaches for different types of projects
  • Different business models and organisational structures for running projects
  • Identifying the challenges along the project lifecycle
  • Project governance throughout the project lifecycle
  • Models and frameworks for building high performing project teams
  • Managing the project sponsor and their project brief
  • How to initiate and scope a project
  • Planning the project
  • Managing the trade-off across time, cost and quality
  • Identifying risk appetite and managing project risk accordingly
  • Procuring project resources, both human and material
  • Managing project change and resolving project issues
  • Controlling projects relative to each milestone
  • Project review, progress reporting and performance reports
  • Project close and post-evaluation/lessons learned.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this advanced project course you will be able to:

  • Use more advanced tools and techniques in project management for leading projects
  • Respond to a project brief from a Project Sponsor
  • Develop the project scope from the Project Sponsor’s brief and achieve Project Sponsor approval
  • Initiate a project after gaining approval, including listing project deliverables, constraints, quality requirements and outcomes
  • Effectively estimate timing, costs and resources required for more complex projects as part of your project plan
  • Build a project management culture by motivating and successfully leading multi-functional project teams
  • Manage change caused by variances against time schedules and cost budgets
  • Conduct risk management activities and apply project scope controls
  • Direct project communications in all directions by effectively managing upwards, sideways and in so doing, enabling a high performing project team
  • Evaluate project outcomes and draw lessons from the project for continuous improvement.

Delivery style

This project management course will be delivered as an interactive workshop consisting of an instructor-led lecture, group and individual activities. This training approach allows participants to work through concepts introduced by the trainer in an application-focused teaching environment. Participants will challenge their understanding of the concepts and consider their application once back in their individual workplace.

About the presenters

John Le Mesurier

John Le Mesurier has facilitated management programs in research institutions and government, both in Australia and the UK, since 2001. This includes delivering programs involving project and change management training to UK Health Trusts and government departments such as NSW Health, Transport NSW, NSW Treasury, NSW Department of Justice (formerly Attorney Generals Department), and the Victorian Library.  
  
John applies the latest advanced practices in the fields of business, leadership, organisational psychology, analytics, and lean engineering to his educational delivery. He is multi-disciplinary, being degree qualified in business, psychology, and statistics. John’s experience includes senior corporate and general management roles in American, British, and Chinese multinationals, as well as consultancies for several leading UK and Irish management firms (Childs Davidson/ Canadean/ GlobalData plc). His consulting projects have covered advanced practice studies in strategy, sales & customer service processes, human resource models, communications, and organisational issues. With this background, he offers the most up-to-date short course delivery for equipping and developing today’s modern professionals in the world’s leading practices
