Public Sector Contract Management Course

This contract management course focuses on the key principles of contract management within the contemporary public sector. This course focuses on the key skills necessary throughout the contract management lifecycle, to ensure that contracts achieve successful outcomes. In this course you will develop your understanding of the key aspects of contract management, including legal issues, contract management planning, managing disputes and risk management and develop a contract management plan. The course will also explore managing contractor performance and contract variations, taking a practical approach with participants applying techniques learnt to case studies and in group activities.

Within the public sector, there is enormous variety in the type and range of contracts. Develop your skills and confidence in contract management - improving contractual outcomes for your organisation, reducing costs, and increasing public confidence.

Course Content

This contract management course will cover the following content:

  • The role of contract management
  • Contract management principles
  • The role of contract management frameworks
  • Establishing clear contract management roles and responsibilities
  • Designing, developing and implementing contracts
  • Importance of effective contract handover and transitioning between contractors
  • Classifying contracts using value/risk assessment
  • Finalising the contract management plan
  • Managing contract performance
  • Negotiating through contractual disputes
  • Risk identification and management
  • Finalising the contract, closing loose ends and conducting post contract reviews
  • Managing contract extension, renewal or variation
  • Probity and ethics in developing and managing contracts within the public sector.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this contract management course you will:

  1. Understand the increasing role of contracting in the public sector.
  2. Recognise the nuances of managing human services contracts.
  3. Have comprehensive knowledge of the principles of contract management.
  4. Understand the legal fundamentals in contracting.
  5. Be able to manage performance disputes and conflicts.
  6. Be able to develop and implement an effective contract management plan.
  7. Identify and manage probity and other risks to contract performance.
  8. Better understand the supplier’s perspective in public sector contracting.
  9. Be able to evaluate, negotiate and administer contract variations.
  10. Understand how to agree, build and monitor KPIs to manage contractor performance.

Delivery style

This contract management course will be delivered as an interactive workshop consisting of an instructor-led lecture, group and individual activities. This training approach allows participants to work through concepts introduced by the trainer in an application-focused teaching environment. Participants will challenge their understanding of the concepts and consider their application once back in their individual workplace.

About the presenters

Siju Johny

Siju Johny is a current Chief Procurement Officer for a NSW Government agency and Steering Committee Member of the The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply Steering Committee. Siju was formerly Chief Procurement Officer at TransGrid from 2018-2021. Under his leadership TransGrid was awarded as the first Energy and Utilities organisation in Australasia to receive Global Corporate Certification by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply. Siju is an internationally recognised procurement expert and thought leader with a deep passion for uplifting procurement as advisory and service function. He has also been recognised as the Top 20 influential CPO’s in APAC.
