Local Government Post Graduate Courses

Designed specifically for people working, or aspiring to work in leadership for Local Government, the Centre for Local Government (CLG) at UTS IPPG offers a range of postgraduate courses and models.

Our popular Graduate Certificate in Local Government and Graduate Diploma in Local Government are excellent entry points for people wishing to build their skills and formal qualifications, while the MBA sub-major in Local Government provides a pathway for local government professionals wishing to pursue a Masters degree. 

Graduate Certificate in Local Government

Thriving in today’s local government sector requires a level of professional expertise that can meet the demands of local communities and stakeholders within a complex environment of economic, social, organisational, financial and governance factors. 

The Graduate Certificate in Local Government combines the latest in local government studies with real world expertise from sector practitioners.  It has been designed by the Centre for Local Government at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance UTS, to equip current and emerging co-ordinators, managers and leaders to make the most of working in local government environments. The Certificate provides knowledge and tools to strengthen professional practice and develops the skills and confidence required to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities of local government in a collaborative peer learning environment.

Graduate Diploma in Local Government

In the dynamic context of rapid technological and socioeconomic change, the local government sector needs agile leaders who bring a high level of professional expertise and a diverse set of managerial and organisational skills. In addition, leaders and managers need to have a strategic understanding of the evolving needs and priorities of both the councils and the communities they serve.

The Graduate Diploma in Local Government is an innovative postgraduate program from the Centre for Local Government at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance UTS. Designed to elevate the professional capabilities of local government professionals, this diploma offers a distinctive blend of academic insights, practitioner based learning, and actionable research application. Underpinned by principles of public service, it provides a unique opportunity for local government professionals to expand their knowledge and competencies within a collaborative peer learning environment.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a sub-major in Local Government Leadership

The UTS Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a sub-major in Local Government Leadership is designed to extend strategic thinking, knowledge and capabilities for professionals seeking to advance their career. The course has been designed to equip leaders with the strategic expertise and practical skills necessary to navigate the complexities of local government. UTS is Australia’s number one young university, and the UTS MBA embeds the ethos of practice-based learning, social justice, inclusion, and research with real-world impact. The course provides flexibility for students to build a broad foundation of general business skills before they gain in-depth knowledge of public policy, financial management, and community engagement, empowering them to drive impactful change and foster sustainable development within their local community.
