Since 2019 the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub have been working in collaboration with the National Justice Project to establish Call It Out – a First Nations Racism Register. The Call it Out Register was launched on 21 March 2022. The Register is a simple and secure way for people to report incidents of racism and discrimination toward First Nations peoples. The details of individuals reporting on the Register are confidential.
The development of the Register began when it was recognised there was a serious absence in any online or other community-based national platform for reporting racism against First Nations Peoples, compared for example to avenues for recording Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism. Our purpose is to collect information on racism, including how it is experienced, how often it is occurring and the impact it is having on people. We know that First Nations people experience racism and discrimination, but it’s true extent is not understood. The Register aims to fill this gap.
The incidents reported on the Register are collected and analysed by the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub. This information informs evidence-based research that enables us to report on racism and its impacts, inform anti-racism action, support the response of First Nations organisations and leaders and educate the wider community.
We launched a preliminary six-month Report in November 2022. In November 2023 we launched an Annual Report covering the period March 2022 to March 2023.
