Advanced Building Regulation

Course content 

This course is designed for the building certification professional – from surveyors, certifiers and architects to the builders and planners who work within the certification system. This advanced building regulation course provides essential knowledge and skills for the effective design, assessment and certification of larger buildings (Class 2-9) utilising the latest National Construction Code (Volume 1 of the Building Code of Australia).

Designed to complement experience at work and on-the-job training, this course will allow you to explore the unique opportunities for building compliance; including the use and assessment of performance solutions. Explore the most up-to-date theory and practice for interpreting requirements around complex buildings and learn how to implement Building Code of Australia (BCA) guidelines and increase the safety of your projects.

This course can also be delivered as an introductory course for building certification professionals and can also be customised for in-house training for organisations.

This course is designed for building certification professionals, such as building surveyors, building certifiers, architects, builders, and planners who work or want to work within the certification system.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this advanced building regulation course you will:

• Understand the role of the BCA as it relates to large scale buildings (Class 2-9 buildings).
• Be equipped to assess large buildings as it relates to the certification process.
• Have a working knowledge of the theory and practice of BCA compliance.
• Be equipped to analyse performance solutions where deemed-to-satisfy requirements cannot be met.
• Be able to navigate around Volume 1 of the BCA and apply it to large and complex buildings.
• Be equipped to assess the fire resistance, access and egress, and services and equipment requirements for large buildings.
• Have a broad knowledge of the entire BCA including the health, amenity and energy efficiency requirements.
• Be aware of key examples and worked case studies considering BCA assessment matters.
• Develop the ability to research, interpret and apply the BCA for the regulation of large and complex buildings.

Delivery style

Online (via Zoom) - a reliable internet connection is required. Video connection details and teaching materials will be made available to participants prior to the course. Industry leaders across the building certification industry will guide you through the complexities of the Building Code of Australia and help you gain confidence in your decision making through the use of many practical examples.

About the presenters 

Stephen Krimmer has held senior positions in academia, local government and the private sector for over two decades. Stephen’s expertise includes planning, sustainability and development assessment. His passion for strategic and sustainable planning outcomes is demonstrated in his planning roles and his development and delivery of training courses across NSW.

For the past decade, Stephen has devoted his time equally between academia and working within the planning sector and is regular presenter at UTS IPPG. Stephen also develops and delivers bespoke training courses for government and non-government organisations including Sydney Trains and regularly speaks at state-wide conferences.

Stephen has University qualifications in Environmental Health majoring in planning and building, as well as qualifications in Training and Assessment and Carbon Management. Stephen’s relevant roles have included; Senior Sustainability Planner, Supervisor of Development Assessment Team and Presenter of professional development programs at UTS IPPG.

Craig Squires is an Accredited Certifier with over 30 years of experience in local government certification, specialising in building compliance, certification processes, and fire safety. As the Coordinator of the Certification and Fire Safety team in a local council in Western Sydney, Craig plays a pivotal role in ensuring regulatory compliance and upholding safety standards across the built environment.

With extensive knowledge of the Building Code of Australia and certification requirements, Craig plays a leading role in the training and development of industry professionals. For over a decade, he has been a key presenter of professional development courses at UTS IPPG, delivering specialised training programs designed for certifiers, building surveyors and construction professionals to help them navigate complex regulatory frameworks. In addition to his work in professional training, Craig has extensive teaching experience in higher education. He has lectured in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the tertiary level. 

Michael Wynn-Jones holds an honours degree in Building Surveying and a Masters in Fire Engineering. Michael is an A1 - Accredited Certifier in NSW, and has more than 30 years' experience as a building regulations consultant and nearly 20 years' experience in an academic environment. Michael is a former Deputy President of the Building Professionals Board (BPB) and is a consultant to the NSW state government on building regulation matters. Michael works as a BCA expert in legal cases and as a BCA design consultant for large building projects.
