12-week Work Experience
Students enrolled prior to 2015, please refer to the note at the end.
All students enrolled in the Master of Professional Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) single or double degrees undertake a 12-week Work Experience program before they graduate. This is a mandatory requirement set by Engineers Australia, the organisation responsible for accrediting engineering courses as well as maintaining the national register of chartered professional engineers.
When can you do your Work Experience?
You need to complete 41035 Engineering Practice Preparation 1 (EPP1) before you can commence your work experience. EPP1 will teach you the skills necessary to find and apply for professional engineering work, and to learn in the workplace.
- Undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) single or double degrees should enrol in 41035 EPP1 as soon as possible. For most students this will be in the semester immediately after they complete 48230 Engineering Communication
- Postgraduate students in the Master of Professional Engineering should enrol in EPP1 in their first semester at UTS
You can do you work experience at any time after completing EPP1, but do not leave your work experience until your final year at UTS.
- After you complete your work experience you will need to return to UTS and complete 41055 Engineering Workplace Reflection
What is involved in completing the Work Experience?
There are four stages in completing the Work Experience:
1. Preparation
You enrol in the preparatory subject 41035 Engineering Practice Preparation, where you will learn about how to apply for a job (writing a cover letter, resume, etc.) as well as learning about workplace cultures and practices, including ethics, equal opportunity, workplace health and safety, industrial relations and professional development.
2. Finding a position
You identify a position in an organisation with professional functions and activities relevant to your chosen major. Work experience opportunities are registered by the FEIT Internships Team on CareerHub, or you may approach an appropriate organisation yourself. Once you pass the resume deliverable stage of your preparatory subject you will automatically be given access to view relevant work experience opportunities on CareerHub that meet your course requirements. Once you have found a position, you then register your work experience on CareerHub, after which you will automatically be enrolled in 41028 Engineering Work Experience. Please note: You cannot self-enrol in 41028 Engineering Work Experience.
3. Work Experience
You undertake 12 weeks of full-time work experience or part-time equivalent in your chosen organisation.
4. Reflect and review
After completing your work experience, you enrol in 41055 Engineering Workplace Reflection, which provides you with an opportunity to report and reflect on your learning during your work experience, as well as having an opportunity to learn from the experiences of other students.
