How to apply
Faculty of Law coursework research subjects, open to enrolment by application only:
76040 Research Thesis
77740 Research Paper
777251 Research Project 1 and 777252 Research Project 2
If you are considering undertaking any of these electives, you should plan ahead to make sure you apply by the relevant deadlines:
- 2025 Autumn session - applications must be submitted by 12pm on Friday 31 January 2025.
- 2025 Spring session - applications must be submitted by 12pm on Friday 4 July 2025.
Students wishing to apply to undertake a coursework research subject will need to adhere to the following instructions:
- Students are not to submit their application until the final results for their most recent Law subjects are released. This will ensure that your provisional WAM is up to date and is an accurate reflection of your academic performance in your Law studies. (Students who apply for Autumn session while enrolled in the preceding Summer session may be provisionally approved, pending release of the outstanding subject result/s.)
- Check that you are eligible to complete the relevant coursework research elective and calculate your provisional WAM using the forumlae 'sum of all' (UTS Faculty of Law subject credit points multiplied by mark) divisible by the 'sum of all law subject credit points' for inclusion on your application form. LLB students may exclude up to three UTS Faculty of Law subjects as per the Honours rules.
- Coursework research students may not conduct research that requires ethics approval. Topics that in any way involve human subjects - that you plan to interview, observe or survey - would require ethics approval and will not be approved.
- Prepare a research proposal (template available at the bottom of this page).
- Complete an application form (available at the bottom of this page).
- For 76040, you must obtain the signature of an academic member of staff in the Faculty of Law who is willing to supervise your thesis.
- For 77740, you may approach a supervisor. If that person agrees to supervise you must obtain their signature. It is, however, not necessary to find a supervisor prior to applying. You will approach a supervisor as part of the coursework component of the subject.
- Email the completed application form and research proposal to Law.CourseworkResearch@uts.edu.au by the advertised deadline.
- Internal faculty processing of applications will take place after the deadline. Students will be advised of the outcome of their application by email.
- If approved, self-enrolment will be enabled in My Student Admin. The deadline to finalise enrolment is the Monday of Week 3 of session.
