What you'll study

You can complete this postgraduate qualification in 18 months full-time or over three years part-time. Within this program, you will complete six core units to build critical knowledge of theories about multilingual learners and language, and teaching methodologies and their practical applications. You’ll also develop knowledge about the specialised field of English language, literacy and/or numeracy that you choose, and the current industry tools and practices used in the field. You’ll be informed by contemporary research and industry practice.

You’ll choose a specialist stream, choosing from literacy, numeracy or English as an additional language in adult education colleges as a dialect in primary or secondary schools; or to post-secondary students. You’ll gain first hand insight into you’re your chosen field by undertaking one or both of your practicum placements in this field. Finally, you will be able to broaden your knowledge further through four disciplinary electives of your choice.

Course highlights

This program develops practice and research informed knowledge and skills that make you job-ready in the specialisation you choose. The course includes two periods of supervised teaching practicums that give you teaching experience in authentic classrooms. The course has a strong social justice focus. Changing from another postgraduate course

You can apply for our courses using your previous study. You may even be eligible for recognition of prior learning, so you won’t need to repeat subjects.

Your future career

You’ll have the choice of preparing to work in primary or secondary schools, private English language colleges, or adult education colleges. Alternatively, you may be teaching academic English to international students in Australia or overseas to help them gain admission into and succeed in courses where English is the language of instruction. 

With the breadth of knowledge you’ll gain in the field, you may also consider a research career in the field of English language, literacy or numeracy education, especially if you have experience working in the field. 

Please note that to become a teacher of English as an additional language or dialect in an Australian school, you must already hold an Australian recognised teaching qualification.
