  The Master of Medical Biotechnology Extension course is designed for scientists eager to establish and advance in the rapidly-expanding biotechnology sector, offering a deep blend of advanced theoretical knowledge and essential technological skills.

  What sets this course apart is its integration of UTS's state-of-the-art biotechnology facilities and expert-taught methodologies, with a curriculum designed to develop your core scientific competencies in parallel with your professional development and leadership experience. Your study plan is customisable with a suite of electives aligned with your professional interests and career aspirations.

  You will gain advanced expertise in biotechnology techniques, including live cell fluorescence microscopy and proteomics, and learn to design research trials to tackle infectious diseases. The course also equips you with professional skills in stakeholder communication, data analysis and visualisation, project management, and risk assessment, tailored to diverse work environments.

  High-achieving students can apply for a more intensive research project, providing you with a track-record for independent research, preparing you for a future PhD project and and your career in biotechnology research and innovation.

  The compulsory core subjects are relevant to all science disciplines and provide a backbone of skills important to a professional scientist; be they engaged in research, science businesses, industries or government organisations. These are the skills of communication, critical analysis, project management and innovation and commercialisation. These are complemented by professional stream choices which enable students to select a portfolio of skills relevant to their chosen career. The professional strand is complemented by medical biotechnology study. Students may have the option of undertaking a small research project, subject to approval by the faculty. For students with suitable achievement levels, an opportunity to undertake a more substantial research project is available by transferring into the Master of Philosophy in Medical Biotechnology (C04389). For those considering a research degree, the Master of Philosophy in Medical Biotechnology, which provides a direct pathway to the UTS PhD program.

  The standard course duration is two years of full-time study.

  The course may also be completed in part-time mode, typically over four years. Part-time students must be prepared to attend some afternoon or morning classes during each teaching week.

• Admission requirements arrow_forward_ios

  To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  Applicants must have the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in biochemistry and cell biology, microbiology, human biology, genetics, laboratory technology, medical science, food science and biotechnology, or pharmacology

  Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

  2025 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students

  This course offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.  

  CSP applications are reviewed continuously by the university and offered based on merit, so we recommend applying early to be considered. Learn more about applying for a CSP, eligibility and key dates.

  2025 Tuition Fees

  • Indicative first-year tuition fee: $9,314.00
  • Indicative Total tuition fee: $18,870.16

  Tuition fees are reviewed annually, with any new rates effective from the beginning of each calendar year. The total indicative tuition fee includes estimated annual increases over the duration of the course.

  Additional Costs 

  Your tuition fees do not include:

  • The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
  • Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
  • Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).

  • Your actual fees depend on the year you enrol, your study load and the subjects you choose. Some subjects fall into different student contribution bands.

• Recognition of prior learning arrow_forward_ios

  Students enrolled in this course may be eligible for recognition of prior learning of up to 36 credit points if the subjects previously studied are deemed by UTS: Science to be equivalent to those specified for their course.

  To be considered for recognition of prior learning, subjects must normally have been completed no more than five years before the commencement of this course.
