What you’ll study

You'll undertake a variety of foundational life sciences subjects, establishing your foundational knowledge of areas like chemistry, biology and anatomy. Then, in your major stream, you'll enhance your expertise through advanced subjects such as haematology, immunology, epidemiology and more.

You'll learn to diagnose disease, investigate the impact of specific pathologies at the molecular, cellular and organ level. Your practical training will include the processing of real tissue samples to identify diseases. You'll benefit from practical learning in our world-class tech-focused educational environments, the Hive Super Lab and UTS Science Super Lab.

  1. First year

    You'll kick-off your studies by completing core units within your Scientist's Tool Kit stream. Studying subjects like genetics, nature and evolution and physiology, you'll establish the thorough foundational knowledge required for your future studies.
  2. Second year

    Building on your solid fundamental knowledge, this year, you’ll commence your Pathology major. You'll study epidemiology and pathogenesis of infections, molecular biology and histology, getting hands-on experience in a real lab setting.
  3. Third year

    Your final year will gain practical knowledge in fields such as pathology diagnoses, blood transfusions and immunological health. You'll also undertake electives, which can be chosen from across faculties such as law, arts and business, to further enhance your learning experience.
  4. Honours

    The research-based Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) is available to eligible students. Completion of this program requires an additional year of full-time study.
  5. Fourth year

    Eligible students can apply for the Bachelor of Medical Science (Medical Laboratory Professional). Building industry capabilities and professional experience through a placement with NSW Health Pathology, this program prepares you for a diversity of roles in the medical laboratory sector.

You'll also be exposed to an extensive understanding of medical science fundamentals such as chemistry, biology and physiology.
