Carl was appointed Dean of the UTS Business School in August 2021. Prior to that, he worked at UTS as Deputy Dean, Head of the Department of Management and Professor of Organisation Studies. Carl has also held professorships at Swansea University, The University of Leicester, and Macquarie University.

The Dean of UTS Business School is responsible for:
- the academic and strategic leadership of the School in pursuit of its vision to be a socially committed business school, focused on developing and sharing knowledge for an innovative, sustainable and prosperous economy in a fairer world.
Prior to his academic career, Carl worked in professional and senior management positions in change management and organisational development for AGL, Lend Lease, Citibank and The Boston Consulting Group. Carl’s combination of senior experience in academia and the private sector provides him with a unique perspective on the role of universities in contributing to social and economic wellbeing.
As a scholar, Carl researches the relationship between business and society in the nexus between liberal democracy and contemporary capitalism. His work endeavours to critically question and reformulate the role of business in society such that prosperity can be shared by all.
His most recent books are 'Woke Capitalism: How Corporate Morality is Sabotaging Democracy' (Bristol University Press, 2022), 'Organizing Corporeal Ethics’ (Routledge, 2022 with Alison Pullen), 'Disturbing Business Ethics' (Routledge, 2019) and 'CEO Society: The Corporate Takeover of Everyday Life' (Zed, 2018 with Peter Bloom). Carl’s writing has appeared in outlets such as The Guardian, Times Higher Education, ABC News, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Australian Financial Review. International in scope, Carl’s work has been translated into Chinese, Dutch, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Spanish and Turkish.
Carl holds a Doctor of Letters (LittD) in Ethics and Organisations and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Education and Organisation Studies from UTS. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from UTS and a Bachelor of Economic and Social Studies (Economic Thought) from University of Wales, Cardiff.
