Catherine Livingstone AC

Catherine Livingstone AC became Chancellor of UTS on 1 December 2016.

Catherine’s distinguished executive career spanned more than 22 years, where she held general management and finance leadership roles. Throughout her career, Catherine has championed the importance of innovation in enterprise growth, particularly design-led innovation, the role of corporate governance and the advancement of women in business.

After qualifying as a chartered accountant, and working with Price Waterhouse in Sydney and London, Catherine joined the Nucleus Group and spent nearly 20 years working in the field of implantable medical devices, including 6 years as Chief Executive Officer of Cochlear Limited from 1994 to 2000.

In her subsequent non-executive career, Catherine has served as the Chair of Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Telstra Corporation Limited and CSIRO. She is a former President of the Business Council of Australia, the Australian Museum and Chief Executive Women.

She has served on the boards of Macquarie Group, Goodman Fielder, Rural Press, The George Institute for Global Health, Worley Ltd and was a member of the NSW Innovation and Productivity Council, the Commonwealth Science Council and the Industry Growth Centres Advisory Committee.

Catherine is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the Australian Academy of Science. She received the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society in business leadership.

In 2024 she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for her eminent service to business, particularly through governance and strategic reform, to tertiary education, to science, technology and innovation capability development, and to the arts. 

This follows on from her Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) honour awarded to her in 2008 for service to the development of Australian science, technology and innovation policies and the business sector.

Catherine has a Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) from Macquarie University. She holds honorary doctorates from UTS, Macquarie University, Murdoch University, the University of Sydney and the University of Wollongong.
