Meet Vinh
Born and raised in Hanoi, Vietnam, Duc Vinh Dinh became interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Information Systems abroad. Drawn to Sydney for its status as key hub in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and reputation for world-class universities, Vinh found UTS.
“My choice of UTS was driven by its approach to practise-based education and strong industry connections, which I believed would serve me well in my career.”
Upon enrolment at UTS, Vinh received the International Undergraduate Full Tuition Scholarship to cover his tuition for the duration of his studies.
“Despite initially doubting my chances, I applied and was incredibly grateful to have been selected, which significantly eased my financial burden and opened up innumerable opportunities.”
As a student, Vinh prepared to enter the workforce by taking full advantage of the practice-based learning experiences his coursework offered.
"The most valuable experiences I gained while studying at UTS included working in a software development team and building analytics solutions. Both experiences were part of semester-long group projects that not only honed my technical skills but also greatly improved my ability to collaborate effectively, manage time, and communicate complex ideas clearly. These projects provided a hands-on approach to learning, enabling me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges. This blend of technical proficiency and soft skills is something I use daily at work, especially when navigating the complexities of team dynamics and project management."
He embraced opportunities to make friends, network, and engage with industry through TechSoc. The UTS Tech Society aims to give students interested in the IT sector opportunities to learn about working in the industry, socialise with peers, and network with professionals in tech.
Vinh also connected with industry professionals at job fairs hosted by UTS Careers. What started as a simple introduction with Turnbull Engineering at a job fair turned into an unexpected internship and then blossomed into his career.
“They were at the fair looking for civil engineers, but I walked up to them and asked if they needed any help with IT—which they did need. During the internship, I worked on troubleshooting hardware and software issues. I continuously looked for opportunities to provide more value using my skills, gradually spending more time developing solutions compared to troubleshooting.”
Vinh worked as an IT Support Intern at Turnbull Engineering for his final semester. This part-time role then evolved into a full-time position as a Software Engineer. By the time Vinh completed his degree in 2023, that full-time role provided him a seamless transition into the workforce.
The diverse skillset I developed at UTS, ranging from software development to data analysis, automation, and more, equipped me well for my role. As an international student, I was grateful for the practical experience gained at UTS which were crucial in overcoming challenges and getting my foot in the door.
Today, Vinh works as a Software Engineer at Turnbull Engineering. Turnbull Engineering is a consulting company specialising in civil and infrastructure engineering. His primary responsibilities include automating tasks and developing analytics solutions to help with decision making based on data.
