Meet Abhishek
Born and raised in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, Abhishek could not imagine living away from a major metropolitan city. Attending UTS allowed him to pursue his interest in Telecommunications at a top-ranked university and take advantage of its proximity to Sydney’s bustling central business district (CBD).
“I wanted to develop my expertise in telecommunications and its professional practice. There were few universities offering this kind of blended course. UTS was one among them. Due to strong links with industry, courses provided by the university were well-known for being practice based and industry relevant.”
UTS students have access to the latest technology and equipment used in telecommunications in Australia and around the world. Thanks to regular curriculum reviews by the Industry Advisory Board (IAB), courses are regularly reviewed and updated to keep up with dynamic industries and ensure that graduates are ready to jumpstart their careers.
Abhishek conducted an Engineering Graduate Project on the topic of “An Evaluation of OFDM and FBMC Communication System Performance.” Not only did this project give Abhishek the opportunity to research a topic that fascinated him, but it also taught him invaluable skills that he would apply in his career—like project management. When he felt stuck and delayed in his research, his mentor and project supervisor, Dr. Daniel Franklin, provided him with the support he needed.
“Dr. Franklin assisted and encouraged me, which helped me to achieve objectives of this project. This opportunity helped to understand how proper planning, time management, resource availability and external factors could impact the work we undertake on our professional life.”
Abhishek found that advice from UTS Career Advisers was instrumental in helping him with the job application process. He even secured his first job in Sydney as a Graduate Network Engineer at Efiniti via a job listing advertised at UTS CareerHub .
“Through their guidance, I was able to develop my understanding on the significance of well documented resume and cover letter. This helped me to build a bridge between my candidacy and potential employer.”
Just a few years after graduation, Abhishek works as a Network Analyst for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). In this role, he supports and maintains the network infrastructure throughout Australia which includes equipment installation and upgrades to ensure network availability, reliability, and security.
For fellow international graduates, Abhishek has the following advice,
Starting a career in Australia for international students can often be more complicated than it appears. "Never give up", this would be my first advice. This is a roller-coaster journey so, treat it like an adventure. Get familiarise with this multi-cultural environment. Find a part time job during studies not just for money but to get used to the work environment. It’s always a good idea to take advice from successful professionals but make your own decisions about your path.
