Meet Jun
Originally from Ulsan City, South Korea, Hyungjun “Jun” Jeong, moved to Sydney to begin his studies at UTS College, formerly known as UTS:INSEARCH. By studying a UTS College diploma, students are guaranteed entry into their corresponding UTS undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Most diplomas take students directly into the second year of their UTS degree. This year long program is an excellent way for international students to settle into life in Sydney and practice their English skills before entering the fast-paced world of university life. Jun received a Diploma in Information Technology from UTS College which led him straight into his second year of study at UTS.
“At UTS:INSEARCH, I met people in the same major who mostly ended up studying in UTS. The tri-semester is good for international students who are studying overseas for the first time. It gives you more time to focus on each subject.”
At UTS, Jun pursued a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and major in Enterprise Systems Development.
UTS has one of the best tech majors in Sydney. The course is practical and reflects industry experience rather than focusing too much on theory. In year 3, I joined the System Development Subject where I built a project plan based on requirements and ran the scrum project. This was the good chance for me to experience and learn Agile development in the tech industry.
Even before graduating, Jun was exposed to practical assignments based on real-world scenarios and developed skills that he would take into his career as a Software Engineer. This kind of industry experience would prove invaluable to Jun’s job search.
“Having UTS on my CV is helpful but interviewers are more interested in what I did at university. Interviewers are looking for someone capable of learning new skills. I think my group project examples and coursework demonstrated that I was a good fit for the role. For example, one of my electives was about iOS app development. The subject was heavily focused on hands-on experience like writing scaffold code base, design app UI, use modern framework for an iOS app.”
Today, Jun works at Atlassian, an Australian tech giant that is currently building its $1.4 billion global headquarters on UTS’s doorstep at Tech Central, Australia’s leading innovation district. As a Software Engineer, he’s responsible for product feature development, supporting cloud deployment strategies, and maintaining application code bases.
“Atlassian is one of the best tech companies in Australia. Working at Atlassian does not just mean working in a good company. I get to meet talented people who are industry experts for many years. It is a good opportunity for me to learn and grow.”
