Meet Kyaw
Originally from Yangon, Myanmar, Kyaw had his sights set on Sydney to pursue his Master of Information Technology. While deciding on which university to choose, UTS’ rank as the top performing young university in Australia (THE Young University Rankings 2023) caught his eye. Although another university offered Kyaw a scholarship upon acceptance, he decided to join UTS for its strong connections in the tech industry and ample opportunities for students in software development.
“I chose UTS despite the scholarship offer because of the unique opportunities and resources it offered in Software Development. UTS has a reputation for its strong industry connections and practical approach to learning, which I believed would better prepare me for my future career as a software engineer. Although the decision meant forgoing a scholarship, I felt that the long-term benefits of attending UTS outweighed the immediate financial gain. The experiences and connections I gained at UTS have been instrumental in shaping my career path and helping me secure opportunities that I may not have had access to otherwise.”
Kyaw credits his coursework with giving him crucial work experience for his resume which helped him stand out in his post-graduation job applications.
“In Internet Programming, I created an online platform that simulated an e-commerce website, allowing users to browse products, add items to their cart, and complete purchases. Through this project, I gained proficiency in a modern JavaScript stack, which included technologies like React.js for front-end development, Node.js for back-end server logic, and MongoDB for database management. On my resume, I highlighted my experience with this project as it showcased several key skills and competencies that are highly valued in the industry.”
He continues to apply these technical skills on a daily basis in his career.
The skills and experiences gained from this project continue to be relevant in my career. I leverage my proficiency in modern JavaScript development stack in my current role, where I contribute to the development of web applications and services. The problem-solving and collaboration skills I honed through my UTS coursework have been invaluable in navigating the challenges of real-world software development projects.
Engaging in extracurricular activities such as networking events, the UTS Programming Society (ProgSoc), and leveraging resources like the UTS Career Hub played a pivotal role in connecting him with opportunities and gaining insights from industry professionals.
“UTS provided resources such as resume workshops, and career counselling sessions, which helped me refine my job application materials and improve my interview skills. Furthermore, UTS organized industry networking events and employer presentations, which allowed me to gain insights into various companies and industries.”
Today, Kyaw is a Senior Software Engineer at Domain, Australia's leading property marketplace. Looking back on his journey, he’s grateful for choosing UTS.
“UTS provided me with a solid foundation of technical knowledge, practical skills, and invaluable experiences that prepared me for the challenges and opportunities in the tech industry.”
