This project explores how and why China is playing an active role in ocean governance.

While China’s role in an international order has been extensively discussed, less is known about how and why China’s rising power is translated into ocean governance.

Our topics cover all aspects of China’s approach to the ocean, including fisheries, seafood trade, 21st century maritime silk road, and conservation of marine species. Through this range of topics, we intend to unpack China’s motivations and aspirations driving its engagement with global ocean governance.

Chief investigators:
Associate Professor Michael Fabinyi
Professor Kate Barclay
Dr Annie Young Song

Featured publication(s): Song, A. Y., & Fabinyi, M. (2022). China’s 21st century maritime silk road: Challenges and opportunities to coastal livelihoods in ASEAN countries. Marine Policy, 136, 104923.
