The question of PhD or not PhD / Degree or Self Taught is always a controversial one in the IT professional or data science space. In the latest “Stack Overflow Survey”, more than 26,000 people in 157 countries (of which 618 were from Australia) were polled this February, and the results suggest that 48 per cent of respondents have never received a degree in computer science. At UTS, we do our part to offer short courses, in-house training, Master and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees (Research) and Master Degree (Course Work) to meet the growing demand for quality data scientists in local businesses. We are happy to see the diversity of intake and high percentage of part-time students adopting these programs. They come from a wide variety of demographic backgrounds and many of them have work experience in business, finance, healthcare, telecommunications, legal and other fields.
An increasing number of people we have spoken with agree with our belief that data scientists should not only have a suite of technical skills – they also need to have sound communication and interpersonal skills, to be creative, and be good collaborators. Data scientists often work in a team setting and at AAi, we are working on an Analytics Capability Framework to address this issue. Contact us at advancedanalytics@uts.edu.au if you would like to know more, or have a view to share.
Remember: there’s no shortage of useful data in most organisations and government departments which, when properly mined and interpreted by AAi, can create unexpected opportunities for driving productivity and business growth.

Want to Get Ahead of the Field? The full program of AAi short courses is now available at the Institute’s website. The course on 30 April is R Programming - Stage 2, which extends the understanding of visualisation and statistical methods in R. The purpose of R programming is to deal with large datasets which require significant processing once they have been imported. The course will teach advanced multivariate techniques for visualisation, and will investigate interactive visualisations. A number of statistical techniques will also be studied, and the course will introduce concepts related to the analysis of time-series data. Finally, participants in the course will look at newer ways of iteratively developing analysis methods using the ‘chaining’ of data manipulation methods.
