Placement opportunities
UTS provides the opportunity for clinical psychology interns and provisional psychologists to complete placements with the Counselling Service. Due to the high demand we have for placements, we are currently unable to offer further placements to students undertaking Graduate Certificates or the 4+2 model of registration.
We hold on-site interviews to ensure the placement is a good fit for you and the service.
To inquire about the availability of placements or for further information, please contact Matthew Vaughan: Matthew.Vaughan@uts.edu.au.
About our placements
- Provisional psychologists who attend placements with the UTS Counselling Service rate their training experience as ‘highly positive.’ They frequently report that they learn a great deal about the specific issues facing young adults from a variety of cultures, as well as the many aspects of mental health, assessment and treatment to be found in a non-clinical population.
- Placements involve a high degree of training on the clinical skills and judgment necessary in making thorough mental health and risk assessments and case-management decisions.
- Provisional psychologists typically provide short-term, focused therapeutic interventions. However, there is also the opportunity for longer-term therapeutic interventions, where appropriate.
- Our theoretical is integrative; staff members have a broad range of training and experience and work in a variety of different models.
- Provisional psychologists work with the direct support of their primary clinical supervisor in addition to the clinical team, but are also encouraged to develop independence and autonomy.
- Provisional psychologists are offered the opportunity to attend, and contribute to, weekly clinical meetings with counsellors, peer supervision, and professional development seminars within, and sometimes outside of the unit.
- Provisional psychologists are also invited to participate in the development and facilitation of workshops and groups on; for instance, anxiety or procrastination.
- Provisional psychologists are encouraged to be open to a variety of ways of working and to develop their self-reflection skills.
- The primary clinical supervisor is trained in a variety of clinical models, with a strong foundation in CBT and invites provisional psychologists to further expand their clinical knowledge and experience.
