Study Speech Pathology at UTS

Speech Pathologists are allied health professionals who assess, diagnose, treat and manage communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. If you’re interested in working as an allied health scientist in the health, education, and disability sectors and want to make a real difference in people’s lives, the UTS Master of Speech Pathology is the perfect choice. 

This two-year program is grounded firmly in the profession, giving you the benefit of an innovative and hands-on approach. What you’ll study

This program blends academic knowledge with workplace learning to ensure you are practice-ready upon graduation. You’ll complete coursework and clinical practice to hone your knowledge and implementation of the evidence in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of a variety of communication and swallowing disabilities.  

You’ll learn about inclusive and respectful practice and receive comprehensive training in cutting-edge trends and technologies, including Generative AI, telepractice, the use of e-health records and other digital health advancements. You’ll also study service provision, including practice management strategies in speech pathology.

Typical course program

The outline below shows an example program for the Master of Speech Pathology based on a full-time study load. Please note that all units are required subjects and that progression in the course relies on you passing all subjects within each session.

    core Speech Pathology subjects
  1. First year

    In the first year, you’ll study evidence-based practice in speech pathology, anatomy and neuroanatomy, speech and language, multimodal communication, swallowing, and more. You’ll also undertake your first clinical placement in a children’s speech pathology clinic.
  2. Second year

    You’ll acquire knowledge of stuttering, voice disorders and acquired communication disability and produce a literature review. You’ll also complete five clinical placements in child and adult clinics. You’ll learn about resolving complex issues and ensuring inclusive practice across diverse populations.

Course highlights

This course will develop your clinical capabilities to work as a speech pathologist with children and adults with communication and swallowing disabilities. You’ll also learn how to apply digital health technologies including Generative AI and telehealth for success in contemporary services. 

Industry accreditation

This program is accredited by Speech Pathology Australia. Graduates are qualified to practise as speech pathologists in Australia and are eligible to apply for membership with Speech Pathology Australia.
